Rounding Cape May NJ

Prior to Sandy I've rounded Cape May almost a dozen times by running close, 75 - 200 yards off shore, remaining well inside the charted shoals and had deep water and less current all the way. Anyone have experience rounding CM the same way since Sandy? Thanks.

Cheers,

Rick

Curious - are you describing between Eph & Prissy wicks Shoals? Also, how far north do you stay close to shore before heading back towards the middle of the bay?

I have rounded the Cape several times last year (2014) on my way to and from High Bar Harbor Yacht Club in Barnegat Light, NJ. I have a shoal draft of 4.7 feet, 37ft Beneteau Oceanis. Key is to stay about 75 to 100 yrs off the shore as you round the cape putting you just north of Eph Shoal. once you pass the northern tip of the shoal there is a section of water that runs about 20 feet deep that you can then follow around to Cape May Inlet.

Why not just go through the canal and avoid the shoals?

Flyman,

I have a 46' boat with a 65' mast (can't do the canal) and 5'3" draft. I tried going close to the shore once going north up the Bay. Going between Eph and Prissiwick. Saw breakers on Prissiwick. Guess I got too close. I got nervous and reversed course, then standing off the shore and going around the Cape clear of Prissiwick. I guess I should have gotten closer to the shore and north of Eph, but finding that passageway would save some time.

I guess the trick here is to hug the shore so as to keep north of Eph. There are some 6' depths on Eph. That leads to a tight pucker factor. Do you run that channel in flat weather or?

Easy? Pucker factor scale 0 to 10?
