another new guy

I fished for 12 years, ended up on a charter and had a blast. Earned my Masters license in 2005, Raised my only son on a fishing boat and his sea legs were developed at 4 years old. When I moved back to Casco Bay from the panhandle I was fortunate to secure a position as a dockmaster. That’s when the chapter on sailing opened. It was easy to get reeled in surrounded by some very cool short and single hand boats in addition to some glorious cruising yachts. It’s hard learning to sail on race night, at least with the guys I fell in with, they get damn serious and I found it hard to hold a can of suds while being ordered to hike. I couldn’t learn at the little sailing school either, a 420 doesn’t have enough free board to hold my butt out of water. We knew we wanted to “cruise”. Just settle in and get even closer to our sea. We sold the sportfish and bought a single owner, New Hampshire built classic. She’s solidly built; thick as my first wife’s hips with excellent joinery below and not a lick of varnish topsides. Grey teak is like a Saturday morning in an Adirondack chair with coffee. Easy. We’re hooked, my family and I. We named her Pelagos after spending so many years chasing pelagic fish. We’re learning to sail. Wish we found it 20 years ago, but so glad we did now.
I lurked and researched here for some time and I’ve completed several improvements to our boat that can be attributed to members content on this forum. I’ve learned a lot from what are total strangers so I just wanted to poke my head out and say hello and thank you.

G'Day Bob, and welcome to CF.

Sounds like you will be a good cruiser now that you don't have to hike out on command! Enjoy your boat and your new addiction.

Cheers,

Jim

Good story, thanks for sharing.

Don't be surprised when your son comes of age and abandons you for a sportfish. Young kids like to go fast, make noise. :)

Happy sailing

Welcome to CF Bob!

Glad you found your groove in life and joined us!:thumb:

I will spare you my juvenile comments on thick hips and joinery as you're just getting settled in .... :whistling:

thanks all, yep we're firmly addicted. Neo's comment about my boy abandoning me is right on point. I am sure he will, he gets it honestly though, we put him on some remarkable fishing opportunities and went really fast too.
First thing he did to our new sailboat was install rod holders on the stern rail !
That's ok Doc, sometimes I feel 16 going on 46 myself.

MdR is for Marina del Rey, CA.... Using it in my screen name wasn't one of my brighter lightbulb moments!

Welcome to the pod from snowy NS.

I love naturally grey teak; never did understand why folks want to mess it up.

Thanks guys. I know, prairie chicken, they pay me to do it and I do it. All winter. Grey teak is like...5:00 Friday.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here.
MDRSailor told all the women here that he was gynocologist and that's why he is happy. Now the truth comes out.

When I was a warped perverted pre-teen... I thought Wow... Being a gyno would be great.... you get to see hoo-hoos all day long....

Perverted adolescent teen... thought... wow... fixing messed up hoo-hoos would be a really nasty job....

Now I'm just a dirty old man... And don't care... :D
