My latest adventure starts today!

After many months of planning and intensive engineering I'm setting off on a new sailing adventure. I have taken the engine, frame and wheels from a 1951 ford pickup and will be mounting my 34 foot sailboat on top of it.

I'll be using 2x4's, old spare ropes and a few rolls of duct tape to secure the boats full keep to the ford pickup frame. Then I will set sail east on interstate 80 on a voyage of discovery of the new world.

The only hard part will be getting over the mountains. But think I'll just use a really large spinnaker and lots of cats (the furry kind, not the two hull kind) which should be enough to get me over that hump.

My only question is what anchor do I use when parking and what type of canon do I mount near the bow.

Should make for an exciting trip... See ya'll on I-80 east!!

Personally, I'd go for a Nikon, not a Canon. But hey, that's just me.

Welcome to CF :flowers:.

It sounds a great plan :thumb:.......don't let the naysayers put you off (they will no doubt be along shortly ).........I say: GO FOR IT! :)

My only question is, what color duct tape have you decided is best?

When anchoring make sure your beam on to the swell...
Recommend Bahamian with grapnels :thumb:

Well I find that it takes at least three different colors of duct tape. Gray of course for structural, Blue for higher torsional loading and pink for cross bracing and because it looks nice...

I've done something similar.... The scariest part was coming down from the Rockies.... Consider more than just a drogue... I wish I had...

Thats where I reverse the big spinnaker and mount it off the stern. Should make a great braking sail. Where did I put that 10 oz spinnaker cloth? Guess I could also throw out some warps of line and a few anchors too..:)

I don't think they will allow you to fly the spinnaker on I-80, when you hit Sacramento you will need to take hwy 50 over the hill, you can raise it here.....

But should have it doused before Meyer's Grade.

Looks like I need to get a road atlas for the trip east.

Yes, Boat luge down meyers grade. That could be exciting!

Since they have replaced the steel guard rails and upgraded the rock walls, a well designed boat might be able to luge Meyers. Still have a couple of flat miles before Lake Tahoe, that could pose a problem.

No worries about the flat wind less sections. I'll have 300 feral cats on harness to pull the land yacht along the doldrum bits...

Beware of faulty muffler bearings on the old F150. they're notorious! See you on the right coast!

I'd make an educated guess on why eskimos use dogs for that but... I'm not educated in this matter, there might be a good reason though...

I am a crazy cat lady. But only one cat,so far anyway. Mr. Timmy, who has an uncanny resemblance to Zee's Bubba De boatcat, was pressed ganged into the sailing life and suffers a bit from mal de mur.

Here's my personal favorite. It's odd how many of the poor $500 a mo bunch eat beans and rice. This is better, and cheaper when you factor in the fuel cost and time. I'm busy. Who has all day to cook? And the heat! And the steam!

Directions: Open can, slam can on plate, add garnish, eat with fingers and tongue, rinse plate, rinse and squash can. Save can to sell ashore. 30 second meals!

Meeee yow!:flowers:

You know some of that cat food looks pretty darn good. Mr. Timmy is pretty much only eating salmon now. I wonder how long THAT will last...

Mr. Timmy has backed down very large dogs before. He wears dog collars and a dog harness. Cat collars are too small for him.

Being from the south, I learned early on there that there was nothing that can't be fixed by a little more duct tape... Plus it now comes in colors including pink and fuchsia...

I'm thinking of taking two monohulls a few 2x4's and duct tape and making a catamaran next year.

twoblocktom 02-04-2013 08:50

No worries lady, the Ford will get you there and back if you so decide. And there are still plenty of Chevrolet's to tie up to overnight!

BRILLIANT!!!!

With ingenuity like this, I see no reason your trip shouldn't be more successful than mine...:p

SC.....when you get here you should start a revolution!

Fred Flintstones had a very distinctive anchor that he used when he was ready to land his bird plane. Just head towards Bedrock, and pick one up!; by the way, the pink ones cost a little extra. Don't forget to say Hi to BamBam! Mauritz :D
