Folding prop for hunter 40.5? 50hp yanmar

Hey guys. Since my old fixed 2 bade prop decided to shoot a blade off, I thought I might get a folder. What do you guys recommend? Price is an issue. Being a shoal draft wing keel the boat does not point well. I have been told a low drag prop will obviously help with speed everywhere, but will help her point higher too.

I am in Brisbane AU. Seems props cost a fortune over here, like 2K+.

What about these 2?

14" Gori from defender $1140 Gori Bronze Alloy 2 Blade Folding Propeller
14" Martec $720!!! Martec Mark III Bronze Alloy 2-Blade Non-Geared Folding Propeller

The martec is not geared. Is this a bad for a cruising boat?

Can anyone suggest any local Aussie companies with good prices? I heard slipstream is good, but seems expensive.

Dennis.

Dennis, I can strongly recommend the Flex-O-Fold three blade foldeer. If you order it from the vendor in the States I think that you will find them to excellent value, and their motoring performance is unequaled amongst folding props. We've had ours now for nine years and about 2800 hours of motoring and it is in as-new condition.

Cheers,

Jim

My ex and I had two blade folding Martecs on her boat and replaced them with two blade folding Flex-O-Folds and were very happy. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

Thanks Jim. Inquiry sent.

This boat isn't my dream "forever" boat so I don't want to overcapitalize.

If I can dock a boat with a one blade prop I think I can dock with the worst performing folder. :p I wonder how bad the martec no geared would be?

Mike. What was so bad with the martecs? I am getting mixed reviews here. What is your experience? I assume they were not geared? Also they are up to mark III these days...

I will add a vote for the Flexofold. Don't have one yet but after researching the options that's the one I picked.

If you want something local I know several people that also like the Autostream prop made by Seahawk in Australia. Low-Drag, Feathering & Folding Propellers for Sailing Yachts & Sailboats made in Australia by Seahawk

The Gori is geared and is a great folder with OK performance in reverse. The Martec is a none geared folder and is crappy in reverse. Typically you see the martec on race boats as it has a very small profile but in light air if you don't have the blades stopped sideways the lower blade will drop and increase the drag. We marked our driveshafts so when we were racing we always stopped the prop sideways, hope this makes sense. The Gori is just about as streamlined as the martec but because its geared when one blade folds they both fold so it can be stopped anywhere and both blades will fold. It looks like a piece of jewlery its so beautifully finished. I have had both and would pay the extra for the Gori.

+1
Part of the reason for the Martec's poor performance in reverse is that sometimes it fails to open.
That can get real interesting when docking.
Flex-O-Folds have the best reverse I've experienced in two blade folders.

A friend of mine in the USA has the same boat as me and got a slipstream geared folding prop and is very happy with it (sold as martec slipstream in the USA).

I am very disappointed (but not surprised) that somehow it was possible for him to buy the same AU made slipstream prop direct from AU and pay for shipping and install costs and be $700 ahead for just the quote of the prop itself for me here in AU.

In fact it seems as if its possible for them to make the prop, ship it to the USA, then have it re sold with profit margins from martec, then send it back to AU, pay tax and shipping to end up with a similar price.

I have seen this kind of complaint on the forum fairly often from Australian members. Seems like you guys are getting screwed for boat parts. Maybe time for an enterprising cruiser to set up a company importing parts from offshore for a reasonable price.

I can see how we are getting screwed on imported parts. But we are also getting screwed for AU made parts!

Yup, compared to Mericans your prices are high but everyone pays more than our friends in the good ol USA. Here in Canada we get snookered just like you guys BUT we are able to cross border shop. Almost every penny I spend on boat parts/products is spent in the USA.

Re: Folding prop for hunter 40.5? 50hp yanmar

To be fair I am sure the exchange rate had something to do with it as at the time the USD was much better. But still defender is offering the prop cheaper than what I can get it today. However I have been told their price is out of date and wrong. If this is true its false advertisement and makes it appear as if Aussies are getting ripped for trying to buy locally.

I'm using a Flexofold 3-blade on my 410 and it has been good!
