- Raised on a cattle ranch in Colorado.
Teenaged hippie in the 1960's and '70s.
Built the first (modern) earth-sheltered home in North Dakota,
homesteaded in north-western Montana.
Three degrees, six adult children, and a yard filled with self-built boats.
Off the grid, with a micro hydroelectric system.
Slowed down by a major stroke but trying to get back to the sea.
