there are a number of decent dvds on sailing monohulls and larger craft. beware the racing ones unless you are into that. my designer Ian Farrier thinks that anything less than 32 feet is not seaworthy. but really 29 feet for a monohull works well i hear. also sailing alone on the open sea is not a good idea. it has been done famously. and in small craft. the trouble with small craft is they tend to get beat up in rough weather. heaving to is an option, but running away is better! when you get larger you get more complicated. and less accessible. if you pull into a foreign port in a forty foot behemoth people are less likely to say hello than if you pull in with a trim weathered 30 footer. so there is a trade off. and all this opinion from me is worth not much! cause you need to develop your own successes. go easy and slow, take some courses and enjoy mostly. its a dream and dreams work best savored.
