03-10-2022 08:21ScorpiusThe outlet is right at the water line. Any heel at all and it is under water. That doesn't seem to be a problem. It just burbles away. However, the exhaust pipe leading to the outlet does a big loop, right under the side deck. This was done to prevent water from getting back to the engine and seems to work fine. I've had no problems in the 34 years it's been set up that way.
If we are motoring downwind in very light airs such that the wind and boat speed are equal (ie ZERO apparent wind), there can be smell as the exhaust gasses envelope the boat. However, otherwise, there is none.
It is quiet. People have commented how quiet it is. The automotive muffler seems to do a better job in that department than a conventional marine setup.
However, the dry exhaust does heat the interior of the boat more than would a heat exchanger system. This was somewhat of a problem when we were in the tropics.
I hope this helps. Again, sorry for the long delay! -
03-10-2022 08:20ScorpiusI'm SO sorry to be so slow getting back to you. I just now saw this message. It's in a strange place, being a comment on my profile.
My exhaust system works very well. It's a "dry" exhaust. I have keel coolers rather than a heat exchanger. This eliminates the need to bring salt water into the boat, have a salt water pump, etc. - for which I am truly grateful. The muffler is just a standard (premium) automotive muffler. It's over 20 years old, has around 4000 engine hours on it, and continues to work just fine - touch wood!

05-10-2010 08:27Geoff S.Hi, Kavw, sorry about the late reply; I never think to look at this little box to see if I have a message. Thanks for the kinds words! Diva's hull is actually a sandwich of glass around foam. Typical 70's-era work, when they didn't know how strong fiberglass was yet, so she's way over-built (a solid inch+ of glass on each outer layer, around a 1.5" foam center). I'm not sure there's any foam down near her bow, come to think of it...might be solid glass down there. If you have any other restoration questions (unfortunately I'm quite the authority on fixer-uppers now, sigh...) give me a shout on my email, divacrewATyahoo.com. Cheers!
