1962 Columbia 29 MK 1, hull #37
A few shots and links for enthusiasts of the first Columbia. Mine is hull #37, built in late 1962 by Glas Laminates in Costa Mesa and delivered January, 1963. Right after commissioning the owner sailed her to Santa Barbara and she has been cruising the Channel Islands ever since. This one was not built to accommodate the optional inboard engine. She has a well designed for a Seagull outboard. These boats, especially the early lighter models, have become rare, but they are, in my opinion, the finest of the old school 60's 29s. I really like the Tritons and Albergs, but there is something special about these S & S designed Columbia 29s... it is the MORC design over the CCA…
7 knots. This particular headsail was used, cost me $100. The full-battened main too I found used but basically new, $500. (it was cut slightly wrong...

Out to Anacapa Island.
Outboard mount. As it is lowered the mount becomes vertical to the surface and the engine is submerged to the correct depth. I really don't like the...
The date on the article is August 17, 1963. Location was Ventura Harbor which was 2 months old. The owner took delivery in January 1963 and sailed it...

My daughter has been a great helper and she is itching to get out to the islands!
I really like the look of a keel and rudder with no cut-out (aperture) for a prop. Give it about 8 more feet of overhang bow and stern and it would...
I blurrred out the stands to more clearly see her lines. I MAY be biased but I think these S and S lines under the water line are some of the most...
S and S and the model makers from Moffett Field Naval Air Station did a nice job sculpting the lines of these hulls.
The original owner painted all the wood. Not beautiful, but the 50 year-old wood is still in good shape! I have removed the old roller furling in...
The setees are open to compartments under the cockpit. I have no hatches so these stay dry. Also I have no inboard so there is a lot of space to...
I will be adding boards to fill in the V when needed, but this is all original.
