Thanks for the boat buying tips, Phil. I'll keep them all in mind when I'm shopping this weekend.

If you can play water from a hose over/around ports/hatches then check inside for leaks...
Taste the water out of the tap.. after a few pumps to see if its ok.. also check the through hulls at engine, toilet etc that theyre clean and well maintained operate freely.. see if you can get to top of mast to check stays, clevis pins and shround fastings, no cracks in mast, reeves ok etc... same at bottom if rust is creeping up strands even by 1 mil its suspect..
If you really like the boat and the owners prepared to drop price subject to survey turning up a major fault.. call one in after you've gone over it for a second opinion on your doubts... it should cost a lot less than a full survey.
But seriously you'll know if a boats been well maintained as soon as you step aboard... slobs cannot hide the fact their sloppy..
if they hang around and keep you talking theyre trying to distract you from something. Also insist on a test sail..

Well... look on it(Engine) as cash in the bank if you get desperate...lol, and the well as extra storage space or a fishing hole... usually find fish swim just below the transom at sea when underway.. If you've a friend who knows metals thats useful.. take a small wooden mallet to tap the hull and decks to find 'Dead spots'.. if you can borrow a moisture meter even better. Look out for white powdery stuff on alloys and if you've a volt meter/tester take it to test if any currents flowing through the metal fittings when all electrics are switched on.. electrolysis is a problem only noticed when everythings wet and it eats away alloys then the rest. A long screw driver and pin hammer can be used to check the keel bolts, place tip on top of bolt, ear to handle then tap the nut and listen to the sound up the handle.. they should all have the same tone, dull is bad, solid is good.. rare they all go bad at the same time..

Just read survey report on Ericson and seen it 9yrs old... raise all the points made by the surveyor if you talk to the guy about this boat... find out if they were seen to and has he reciepts for any major jobs like anti osmosis treatment etc... the running rigging, standing rigging leak etc.... looks like they've done a nice job on the interior tho..
    Phil
