No worries, I am also guilty of long time between messages. I did go dry exhaust but made a stack/radar platform. I just used off shelf muffled and an in line resonator. It was much quieter than I expected.
    Thanks again for the info.

ps. Scorpius is a Colvin Gazelle hull with custom deck, house, and rig.

The outlet is right at the water line. Any heel at all and it is under water. That doesn't seem to be a problem. It just burbles away. However, the exhaust pipe leading to the outlet does a big loop, right under the side deck. This was done to prevent water from getting back to the engine and seems to work fine. I've had no problems in the 34 years it's been set up that way.

If we are motoring downwind in very light airs such that the wind and boat speed are equal (ie ZERO apparent wind), there can be smell as the exhaust gasses envelope the boat. However, otherwise, there is none.

It is quiet. People have commented how quiet it is. The automotive muffler seems to do a better job in that department than a conventional marine setup.

However, the dry exhaust does heat the interior of the boat more than would a heat exchanger system. This was somewhat of a problem when we were in the tropics.

I hope this helps. Again, sorry for the long delay!

I'm SO sorry to be so slow getting back to you. I just now saw this message. It's in a strange place, being a comment on my profile.

My exhaust system works very well. It's a "dry" exhaust. I have keel coolers rather than a heat exchanger. This eliminates the need to bring salt water into the boat, have a salt water pump, etc. - for which I am truly grateful. The muffler is just a standard (premium) automotive muffler. It's over 20 years old, has around 4000 engine hours on it, and continues to work just fine - touch wood!

    to be continued . . .

Hi, I read about your exhaust. I wondered about more details, for example, do you get much noise, or smell from it? I am doing similar, and can't decide between a mast midship (which doesn't interfere with rigging) and as you describe, out the side. However, I don't have a very high deck, freeboard is low. The boat is a Colvin design, 'Doxy'. Thanks. Kristjan
