Video: 1907 Schooner Martha Transpac in 2015

Howdy!

I don't know if this video has been posted here before.

I just saw it and enjoyed it. Perhaps you or your kids will too.

It shows the Schooner "Martha" (built in 1907) going from California to Hawaii. Looks like a fun trip. One young girl aboard as crew.

Re: Video: 1907 Schooner Martha Transpac in 2015

The last time I saw Martha was in San Francisco Bay in 1967. She was in a race with White Cloud, a 57' Alden staysail schooner restored by my friend John McNamara. They were neck and neck coming out of the fog, which was in ragged streamers. Martha's main was in ribbons and it was a sight I'll never forget. I was the 22 year old 2nd mate on a Red Stack Mickie tug with our barge. The skipper of the Sea Fox hated sailboats and I had to stand there in the wheel house biting my lip while he cursed them. Note: that wheelhouse, in which I stood so many mid-watches, is on the historical ship pier where you can see Alma and others in S.F.

Great video. I may need a copy of the audio. We have made 11.4 by GPS on a close reach on Roxy. Its a blast moving that much water. (Roxy 36 tons, 58 LOA, 1984 Camper Nicholson Ketch.)

Wow, what a top few days on the water. Beautiful boat and a happy crew. You couldn't knock the smile off that little girls face. That is what sailing is all about.

Thanks for posting the great video. We saw Martha at a couple of the wooden boat shows. She was being replanked during the same time we were replanking our schooner so we "share a tree" in that our planking wood was part of a tree ordered for Martha's planking. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/85357355415008720/

Steady Hand, thanks for the utube flick. What a gorgeous vessel. She appeared to be wicked fast. Great experience for this young lass and crew. Really enjoyed it..
