The last time I saw Martha was in San Francisco
Bay in 1967. She was in a race
with White Cloud, a 57' Alden staysail schooner restored by my friend John McNamara. They were neck and neck coming out of the fog
, which was in ragged streamers. Martha's main was in ribbons and it was a sight I'll never forget. I was the 22 year old 2nd mate on a Red Stack Mickie tug with our barge. The skipper
of the Sea Fox hated sailboats and I had to stand there in the wheel
house biting my lip while he cursed them. Note: that wheelhouse, in which I stood so many mid-watches, is on the historical ship pier where you can see Alma and others in S.F.
