The last time I saw Martha was in
San Francisco Bay in 1967. She was in a
race with White Cloud, a 57' Alden staysail schooner restored by my friend John McNamara. They were neck and neck coming out of the
fog, which was in ragged streamers. Martha's main was in ribbons and it was a sight I'll never forget. I was the 22 year old 2nd mate on a Red Stack Mickie tug with our barge. The
skipper of the Sea Fox hated sailboats and I had to stand there in the
wheel house biting my lip while he cursed them. Note: that wheelhouse, in which I stood so many mid-watches, is on the historical ship pier where you can see Alma and others in S.F.
