Re: Sewing machine
dergon, I'd weight heavily what senor mechanico writes: he knows a lot more about sewing machines than most of us users!
Fwiw, I used to have my Mom's old Pfaff 130, and it was adequate for cockpit cushions and the like. It sewed a multitude of canvas jobs, from mainsail cover to weather cloths and rain catchers, and a hatch dodger. I recently acquired a SailRite LSZ-1 used, and having the walking foot is really nice. I miss my old machine, for its ease of stitch length adjustment, but I really like the walking foot.
My friend, Sapient Sue, also on CF, has an LSZ-1, and she has sewn light weight glamourous fabrics with it, so it is not an impediment to sewing light weight cloth, as long as you downsize the needles, and use appropriate gauge thread.

Re: Sewing machine
Geeez...this reminds me of an anchor thread.

Re: Sewing machine
The Janome HD 3000 is just a typical sewing machine. Nothing "Heavy Duty" about it.
I don't know what kind of needle or machine to use if you want to sew on an anchor.

Re: Sewing machine
I don't know where you are currently but I am in Fort Lauderdale, and I have a Sailrite Ultrafeed ZigZag (LSZ-1). I have made sail covers, bimini, and dinghy chaps using Sunbrella fabric. The Ultrafeed works like a charm. I would be willing to sell it to you if you could pick up. I have not had it on the boat so it is in perfect condition.

Re: Sewing machine
For those considering 'clones', I'd like to point out that you don't just by a machine from Sailrite, you buy into an ecosystem that supports cruisers doing their own work. The have, bar none, the best telephone and email tech support of ANY company I've even done business with. My machine is 15 yrs old, works perfectly, and is popular with everyone in the anchorage/marina. I recommend both the machines and company whenever I can.

 +1.
Even if you only buy a couple of yards and some grommets.

Re: Sewing machine
Sailrite's tech support is like Tellie's for Spectra watermakers.
