Sea Sick Cat

Our cat gets terribly sea sick, even on very short sails. Any suggestions?

Try Tums

Some years ago, we had a dog who got car sick. Our vet suggested Tums before the trip. We now give Chewable Tums to our cruising dog before long and/or rough passages. Two Tums in a 60 pound dog relaxes him and we have never had a problem.

Now it is probably a lot easier to give our Toby two Tums with some cheese than it will be to get a cat to take 1/2 of one but its worth a try.

Additional Info and Ideas

We now sail a catamaran, inherently more stable than a monohull but we did this on a 24’ sport fisher off San Diego with the car sick dog and, again, had good results. We were out in some truly awful conditions. The dog was a 100+ pound Rottweiler female. When she got sick it was a BIG clean up (I have stories). With Tums she never did.

Maybe for a cat, ½ a chewable crushed and served in a little tuna. Like all motion sickness remedies, it is better taken before a problem occurs.

Cool! two votes for Tums. I keep them around for myself, so I can certainly share. We just bought a trimaran, and she has only sailed on monohulls to this point, but I am hoping the tri will be better. We will find out in January. On the Rot, I empathize. I had a 110+ pound female who grew up riding in the truck with me. She got parvo at about a year and a half, and it started with her throwing up in the truck. (she did survive the parvo)
Thank you both for the info. I will post when I find out if it works.

Hi Kai Nui, Mrs Wheels here,

where you successful with your cat and the sea sickness. This is one aspect that Wheels and I are greatful so far that Mizzen and Gennika don't seem to suffer from.

On previous boat, with previous wife etc, we had 3 cats.

2 of them always got sea-sick and finally abonded our liveaboard ship after a year or so.
(At the dock in St. Thomas)

I was never a cat lover, but in love with this wife.
Constant hazzle with cat-litter getting on the teak decks , puke and sh!it and other problems.

No wonder I don't like cats....

Cat is likely now dead, since that last post was ten years ago!

It seems I need to learn to read a date; hope I never need to pill a Cate! Will anyone take the bait?
