Sailing the BVIs with Teenage Son - Suggestions?

We're spending the last two weeks in December sailing around the Virgin Islands on our Yacht S/V Fidelity with our 13 year old son. We're looking for family oriented things to do. Any suggestions or other families with children that would like to meet up would be welcome. Please feel free to contact us.

Not family orientated but what I loved as a teenager was a good pair of binoculars, a dinghy I could call my own and some good snorkel gear.

A decent pair of Fujinon stabilised and a light inflatable with tiny outboard, handheld VHF and a couple of litres of water and mask/snorkel/foot covering flippers/sun vest may keep him amused for a few minutes.

Beachcombing. Eating. Snorkeling.

The trail through boulders at the Baths. The Bubbly Pool behind Jost Van Dyke. The rum distillery above Cane Garden Bay is a science lesson by itself. There is an observatory on the mountain peak of Tortola. Research on the flamingos at Anegada. Snorkel the caves at Norman. Everybody read Treasure Island and compare the map of Norman to the map in the book.

Most of the charters begin and end at Wickhams Cay II in Roadtown on a Saturday or Sunday. Anchor below the customs dock and dinghy in to the Moorings/Sunsail/Footloose base and you will likely find families with kids that might be interested in hooking up in the classic counter-clockwise rotation.

I second the Bubbles at jost van dyke. Great hike up. My kids loved the Baths the best in the bvis. Have him read Treasure Island on the trip and get to Normans island. Amazing, eerie experience. There is a neat pirate show in virgin gorda that appeals to all ages and it is a social atmosphere for meeting people.

You said you would be there the last two weeks in Dec. Is there a chance you would be able to catch the full moon party at Trellis Bay on 12/10/11? We have been to one, and while there was certainly lots of adult drinks, the atmosphere was family oriented. A great BBQ, Bon fires at the waters edge (large cast iron balls), stilt walkers, a steel drum band etc.

Otherwise, see the other posts.
