Pirate School - Newcastle Region Maritime Museum (NSW Australia)
I recently sent my daughter to the kid’s Pirate School at the Newcastle Region Maritime Museum (NSW Australia). Included was a children’s tour of the museum where they were guided around all the exhibits and equipment. She left with her Pirate Graduation Certificate (now proudly displayed on the boat) and her first booty of one gold sovereign.
Her attendance has really paid off; now when we are on the boat she politely addresses me as “Captain” and she is as entranced as ever with the boat and the ways of the sea. After seeing the exhibits and her few lessons in Buccaneering she seems to be a lot more disciplined on the boat. On the last outing at nearly five years of age she was a lot more helpful fixing a holding tank pump than I would have ever expected from many adults. It is also great fun to do a bit of pirate role-play and we jestfully hoist our Jolly Rodger.
Hopefully the same will become a regular event!
