Yes I know. To re iterate...........he is not a problem -- he stays with us and is very cautious. Not skittish like most cats. Some one suggested a carry case when we go ashore..................and teather which is okay too.
My concern is critters coming to the dock and or the boat perhaps when we are away. Also, dogs in Mexico and south are not on leashes like our north american friends are. They are also very hungry.

Just wondering if anyone out there has actually done this?

Well in that case, make sure when you leave the boat, that you have him properly in goal within the cabin and that potential critter intruders looking for a meal of Felis catus cannot gain access to the interior (not only mammalian carnivores such as dogs, but as you mentioned crocs and related kin, certain large constrictors, and of course the fairly wide variety of avian predators).

I agree with Astrid- Don't take chances with the 5 year olds safety Keep him tethered
