New Baby onboard

Very general question but a place to start. My daughter is joining us onboard our leopard 47 catamaran and is due to deliver our grandson in July. Plans now are for here and the baby to live with us for who knows how long. Suggestions of where we start making the boat assessable and safe fro both expecting mom and new baby. We are still trying to decide where the baby will be born (please God not on the boat I don't know nothin about birthing no babies) as we are based in the Eastern Caribbean. Suggestions and resources appreciated.

New Baby onboard

1) Put a net all the way around the boat life lines

2) Put webbing around your tramp so small things can not fall through

3) Put foam bumpers on all sharp corners

4) Get small life jacket and floats

5) Check all cabinet locks

6) Find a good location for a baby swing

Re: New Baby onboard

My GF came down to the boat in Greece when she was 3 months pregnant. She struggled with the heat and the motion when sleeping, but was fine when we were sailing, even healed over. In the end she had to go home to her parents whilst I delivered my boat to Turkey.

I'm not sure if my GF would have been any better off on a Cat at anchor, but if I had AC and stayed in a marina she would have been fine.

Of course your daughter may not have any issues or have completely different probs.

My daughter cam for her first sail recently at 2 months and thankfully she was happy to sleep in the forward cabin when sailing (flat seas) and was also happy in the cockpit.

For overnight sails I have jack lines running along the cockpit floor and when my daughter is old and mobile enough, we will use them for her as well.

Re: New Baby onboard

Relax big guy. Decide where you will be as quickly as possible so you can look for an appropriate facility or midwife for the babies birth. Don't worry about baby proofing quite yet. For the first 4 months your biggest worry will not be ready to take the helm. Focus on where the two will sleep, making sure there are enough hand holds, getting a good baby sling so your daughter (or other carer) can be hands free. Get a brest pump. Buy diapers.
