Looking for other kid cruising boats

Hello,

This a follow up to an earlier post I made about 6 months ago "cruising with children". We are getting ready to head out in mid July and would like to hook up with anybody else who may have similiar plans or has kids and just lve to sail. We are leaving from Dover, NH and heading south(slowly) to Cape Cod and the islands. We will make our way south than over to the Bahamas and points south over the winter. We have 2 children 12 & 10 and would love to meet up with anyone along the way. We are cruising in a 43' Voyage catamaran "Dream Catcher" if you see us please stop bye and say hi. Send an email to saildreamcatcher@juno.com if you would like to hook up.

Best regards,

Hi Dave:

I was just down in Mexico and talking w/ cruisers. One of the things they said, other than it was great that you are taking kids cruising, was that when you get on the radio nets in the mornings during the arrival/departure part you might pipe up and say, S/v Dreamcatcher we have a ten year old boy and a twelve year old daughter on board. From there play dates get set up. Good luck. We are on a slower time frame than you, and on the West Coast, but plan on getting to that side of the world in the next few years. We have a daughter nine and a son 8. Let us know how it goes. I'll be following your site. Perhaps I can get my kids to email your kids as pen pals?

Dave, years ago Sail or one of the other mags had suggested a "kids on board" burgee. I don't remember what it looks like, but you might ask a couple of the mags if they ever got anywhere with the concept.

With ages 10-12 I don't think a teddy bear would win you any applause...but if you can think of something appropriate, getting it printed onto a t-shirt or other material that can be quickly turned into a burgee might be an idea.

pirate pen pals

This is our first post on cruisers forum, and I guess it is fitting that it has to do with our kids We are a family of 4, with a girl age 12 and boy age 9 and will be heading out in January leaving from Panama for 2 years on a Gulfstar 50. I would love to get a few pen pals lined up for my kids, especially my daughter, to communicate with before we leave. I'm sure she would love to talk to other soon to be or current sailing kids as none of her landlubber friends will be able to fully understand some things. We are not totally sure of our cruising route but may go thru the canal and spend some time on the Pacific side of Central America, most of our time will be spend on the Eastern side of CA and we do plan on spending at least one hurricane season in the Rio Dulce. It would be great to hear back and encourage me to keep posting

How about some permutation of a standard (playground or school) road sign?

We have two boys who we would like to homeschool while sailing the Med for a couple of years. They would be looking at doing their high school years on the boat. I've heard that there are two excellent home schooling systems (especially for yachties), one out of NZ and the other British Columbia, Canada. Does anyone have any further info about this or comments/suggestions? We are looking at leaving in 12-18 months time.

boat schooling

Hi there . We have a 12 year boy and the 8 year old girl .
Next year right after the summer we are going cruising too for an extended period of time. We are going to use one of the programs in British Columbia, for the reason that we live here.
My wife talked to one lady who home schools three kids and she said the support here is excellent , and what's more it is free .
The school supply them with lap top computers, pay for piano lessens and lots of other activities .Every school district here receives from the province $6000 per student per year . If you home school , they may spend on each child maximum $3000 a year . Do you math . Also you are allowed to adjust the program to your child's needs .
We'll be looking closer into it in a coming months , so I will keep you posted .
