Kids in 1930's rounding cape horn video!
Thought you may enjoy this old clip. They end in SanFrancisco under the NEW Golden Gate Bridge!
Cheers,
Paul.

Where are the PC police when you need them??? All the way from New England to SF Bay and not a PFD in sight. Teaching a child to shoot a pistol and that to assassinate sharks. No hot water showers. Hope they had a holding tank for the necessities.

Thanks, Paul. Great video and spectacular footage.
No engine, no GPS, no AIS. An adventurous family.
Vastly better than a quadcopter Go Pro YouTube video.

Re: Kids in 1930's rounding cape horn video!
Paul,
Thanks for sharing that video here. I had not seen that, but had heard of Wanderbird before. Now I can see why it was such a famously known boat.
What an amazing adventure film, and such an adventure for those two young children (boy and girl) who did so much on that boat. Amazing to see the small boy high up the mast, out on the bowsprit, and coming down the ropes, doing work on the boat. Great fun! I would have loved to have done that at that age. The seas shown down by Cape Horn look mountainous (something hard to show in film).
Here is what the caption for the film said: Produced in 1936, this wonderful old film shows a voyage aboard a schooner named Wanderbird around South America. The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South". For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures.

I loved this video - thanks for sharing. Funny about those invisible McMurdo PFD's.
Putting this in perspective - I have my Father's High school varsity letter in marksmanship and his rifle & pistol. He carried them to school & kept them in his locker at Flint HS in Michigan. He also competed on the U of M team. Back in the day when every boy carried a pocket knife for the necessities of cleaning your nails & removing splinters. Nobody thought negatively about it, nobody felt threatened.
I learned to shoot at summer camp. I mentored the Boy Scouts at the range with carbines and M1 rifles while the cub scouts shot off 1000 round bricks of 22. You don't need to own or love guns but everyone should spend at least a day at the range. You are not allowed to have an opinion if you never touch one or shoot off a round.

Great video, thanks for posting. Reminds me of my father's tales before we became a nanny state.

I wonder how and when they did their MOB drills? Seeing those kids looked scary.

Warwick "Commodore" Tompkins is still a well known fixture in Bay Area sailing circles. I have met him and I believe he is out cruising his Wyliecat 38 "Flashgirl"

What is wrong with teaching children about firearms safety at a young age? My Dad taught me when I was around 8 years old and it was a wonderful feeling to have an adult demonstrate that level of trust in me at such a young age. I recognize it is no longer politically correct in this enlightened age... pity! Phil

Gosh, could it be the same guy, 80 years later?
Cool film.
