How to prevent mice.

How do I prevent mice coming on board when in a Marina? I have a dog so if mice came on board I would not be able to use poison.
How do they come in?

Rat Guard or trade the dog for a cat.

Probably. We’re back to getting a cat. I’ve got a cat who has caught untold numbers of lizards, two snakes and a baby snapping turtle. No you can’t have her.

Old fashioned mouse traps do work and won’t kill your dog. If you don’t want to kill them, the smallest Hav-A-Hart trap will catch mice alive.

Re: How to prevent mice.

There are non-toxic mouse/rat baits. Rodents are not able to vomit, or belch, so these kinds of baits take advantage of that. They swell up inside their stomachs and create a lot of gas, thereby killing them. Even if your dog ate a lot of it, it would make him very uncomfortable, but it wouldn't kill him. And then, you can place the baits in areas that the dog would have trouble getting to.

What a horrible thing to do to them. We need better humane management options.

Re: How to prevent mice.

At anchor or at dock I put bronze wool in the hawse holes (rubber underway). All other vent holes have a stainless steel mesh screens. And also screens on all deck hatch openings. Plug/screen any holes 1" or greater. Keep all foods in sealed containers below.

I have never had a problem, but a neighboring boat had at least 1 that was quickly solved with a dab of peanut butter on a glue trap. Put them in galley cabinets and bilge where dog can't get to them.

Don't use poison. They will find the warmest place to die and the decay process will stink out your boat for weeks.

Re: How to prevent mice.

I set bait traps on the dock and glue traps inside. Nothing is too cruel for those mosters when compared to the cost in time and damage.
I had some move onboard for a couple weeks while I was absent. The destruction was phenomenal. Wish I knew where the photos are. They destroyed everything. Chewed every label off every can. Chewed through liquid soap and condiments. Prescription drugs. Even Viagra. Wonder how that worked out for them. The carpet in the Vberth was destroyed. Wiring was chewed through. Clean up and repair took a few days.

I've heard that closing or blocking all openings and placing running gas generator at base of companionway steps works. Rats will die from carbon monoxide poisoning at companionway while attempting to escape.

Re: How to prevent mice.

The usual human option smash it on the head or my cat kills or , but if my dig killed a deer there would be uproar.
Catch it humanly and take it off, put a bell on your cat and if you have a high driven prey dog that I do muzzle them honestly get a grip
