First time International Travel with Pets

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had any experience or guidance on how International Health Certificates worked with regards to potential weather delays etc. We have been planning a trip from Charleston SC to the Bahamas using the upcoming long weekend to make our crossing. Our vet has scheduled us to see the pets on Monday 1/13 expecting a 4 day turnaround from the USDA so our certificates will be dated 1/17 which is our planned departure. As the departure date gets closer and the weather forecasts solidify, I wonder about the procedure if our departure gets pushed by a week, for example. As I understand it, our certificate needs to be dated within 48 hours of our departure

Any insight or resources would be much appreciated!

Are your pet's named Catch 22?

Snipet:

Health Certificate
An international veterinary certificate from a licensed veterinarian is required within 48 hours of importation into the Bahamas.

My experience with this is when traveling by boat the Bahamians are a bit more relaxed on the 48-hour requirement as they understand your arrival date may vary depending on the weather.

A good rule of thumb is to try to keep the health certificate within one week of your actual arrival date. Our health certificate was issued 5 days prior to our arrival date on our last trip to the Bahamas, and we didn’t run into any problems.

We have used both Good Vets Coconut Grove and Clematis Animal Clinic in Palm Springs, FL and both are very familiar with the Bahamas health certificate process.

Bahamas Pet Import Permit
One major change that took effect on September 1, 2024 is the online process to apply for the pet import permit through The Bahamas Agricultural Health and Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA).

The second major change is the new duration of the pet import permit. They are now valid for 6 months, starting from the intended travel date.

Before you can apply online, you must first register with Click2Clear. This may take a day or two to complete, so give yourself enough time. Also note you will need to upload a copy of your passport or driver’s license.

Re: First time International Travel with Pets

Thank you for the replies! We have already applied and been approved for our pet import permit on the Bahamian side but that is very good information for anyone who stumbles across this in the future!

It sounds like we're doing the right thing and trying to get as close to their requirements as possible.

Our experience has been The Bahamian authorities are very understanding to cruisers. We have arrived as much as a week late, but have always been granted entrance.

Get there as quick as you can. Save the AIS track to show them if they are interested. But most of all just be honest and sincere. The authorities are expert at sniffing out a scam. Don’t try to pull anything over on them.
