pirate Dogs on board

We have a Pit Bull. His name is Buliwyf (Bull-vye). He`s really great at keeping the dock patrol at bay. He just sits on the bow and looks at you with no exspression on his face. Most people see him and turn around. For those that tempt fate they get a second look from him and then they decide not to press the issue. No one has come up all the way yet and if they did they would greeted by 90lbs of pure happy dog. He would lick you to death, if he already knows that is. Otherwise I don`t know. I think they are the perfect size dog. they can get around all over the boat with little effort. Great swimmers, and best of all they can take care of themselves and you too.

do you cruise very far with your dog? if so, how was the training time? we're thinking of sailing/cruising with our dog aboard a cruising catamaran.
cheers,

dog on board

Hi.
I traveled for a year with a dog and a cat on board We had no problems,The cat didn't go up top,The dog was a shih tzu in full coat she is totally paper trained never goes outside so she stayes pretty clean, and it also helps keep boat clean not tracking in dirt if she went out. There are times when ruising that a dg that isn't trained to g on the boat could be a problem,Sometimes when your at anchor it's to dangerous to get off the boat,an it's not healty for the pet not to go ,also it;s not comfortable for it.By all means have a pet on board but please make sure it will go potty below the deck if need be for it's safely.

Hi all,

We are planning to cruise with our dog (terrier-mix). I'm not so concerned with the training aspect as I am the customs requirements of foreign countries.

Can anyone comment on what we should expect?

Thanks in advance,

-Andy

Hi Andy Im not sure of the customs requirement where you are but in OZ and NZ they are pretty draconian. Here in Darwin we had a very unfortunate incident where a boat comming in from overseas with a medical emergency in the middle of a severe storm was refused entry into a marina (by richard crainium custom officers) because they had a dog and subsequently sustained major damage endangering the life of the crew and a total loss for the boat.( the dog had all of its vaccinations up to date) The upshot of all of this is that if anyone heading down this way with a pet may find it a bit difficult.
