dogs in the whitsunday islands
Hi All
We intend sailing the Whitsunday Islands for a couple of months this year. We had just assumed that we would take our dog with us who is very comfortable on board. We have however just been told that dogs are not allowed on any island in the Whitsunday group.
I'd appreciate any advice or experience anybody can share with managing dogs in the Whitsundays
thanks, gezza

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands
Dogs, or any domestic pet, are prohibited on all national park islands (most the Whitsundays). We travelled there last year with our Jack Russell who at one stage did not leave the boat for six weeks.
Even in Airlie Beach, the council prohibits dogs from many public areas, such as the foreshore parks.
Many people ignore the law, but the penalties are very stiff.

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands
Not just the Whitsundays, almost all of the islands off the Queensland coast are national parks.

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands
Many people take their dogs and restrict them to below high tide. We did this, but you need to be careful about where you go (eg not in high use areas like Whitehaven Beach).

Dogs are definitely banned on Keswick Island (off Mackay).

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands
We are dog lovers and own 2. However, they are now left at home when we travel Coral Coast. Kepple Island seems to be the only " dog friendly " place.
Be very careful , we heard from a dog sailor that other yachties have been known to ' dob in ' !!

Why are cats allowed, but not dogs?

Only those yachties who object to walking in dogshit or who appreciate the native wildlife would "dob you in". Fortunately there are many of them.

Why do you believe that cats are allowed?

No domestic animals are allowed on shore.
If you're going to take a pet up the Queensland coast, it's essential they are able to go to the toilet on board.

The only cats allowed in Queensland National Parks are catamarans. Even so, I wouldn't recommend taking them above the high tide mark.
PS. Great Keppel Island isn't a NP, so dogs are not banned, yet.

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands
We have had dog with us from the Gold Coast to Lizard and back to the Whitsundays. Great fun but yes the doghaters make it hard in the Whitsundays. They can go ashore on Hamilton as it is not a national park.
Hideaway Bay is great for dogs too and the moorings are foc at Gloucester eco resort if you eat there, pool too!
She has learned to use the grass mat but not nice for anyone.
Take your dog, plenty do and much less environmental damage than all the charter boats pumping poo into the passage!

Hmm... I always thought that catamarans were banned from Qld National Parks and that as the Island National Parks begin at the high water mark the said cats are thus precluded. I also believe (but don't know) that the surrounding Marine Parks extend to the high water mark so I'm guessing that cats are allowed in the Marine Parks unless they are feral cats (of any persuasion). These are not welcome anywhere as far as I can tell.
