Great to see that you have thought through this issue and made a wise decision.

Re: dogs in the whitsunday islands

Having cruised the Whitsundays with our former much loved dog we can confirm that you cannot take dogs onto the beaches of the islands and some of the mainland. Initialy we were told we were good by National Parks to take the dog up to the high water mark. What they failed to tell us was that Marine parks are repsonsible for land up to the high water mark which also prohibits dogs on beaches. We have been in Woordwark Bay and watched a marine parks boat sit/hide off the beach and speak with those who took their dogs to shore. Airlie has many places and paths for dogs. Hamilton used to allow dogs BUT they could only be walked out and back to the southern breakwall with strict but fair rules regarding picking up after your dog. Dogs were fine at all marinas at the time we were there last year but still got made with people who flagrantly would let their dogs off the lead, watch them crap and then ignore cleaning up. Embarrassed one such ingnorant when I yelled out that I would get a plastic bag and took it to them and had a giggle as they gagged pciking it up. Welcome to responsible Dog on boat ownership.

Yes there sure are. Too many people don’t care about the native fauna. Too many people seem to enjoy the sensation of doggie doo between their toes without regard for those who don’t share their proclivities. It’s best to take some video and pass it on to National Parks to deal with these recalcitrants.

For the record, I find how you wrote this concept offensive. I do not believe any dog owner thinks that. Rather, they think dog poo is about the same in that it is animals poo, and stinky, but natural, and biodegradable; they believe their dog's poo is free of parasites and will not transmit diseases. (They're wrong on the last two.) They haven't yet accepted that their letting their dogs do it on the beach is enough of a problem for other people to change their own behavior. Feedback from "the law" can also be helpful, but regular social pressure is also effective.

Calling someone who does not want their kids or themselves exposed to roundworm, pinworm, leptospirosis is not a dog hater at all; they're trying to be a good parent, and labeling them a dog hater is unfair...and often incorrect.

While there are laws in place to limit the dogs on the beaches, perhaps it is lazy, uncooperative owners who should be the focus of your dislike. If more people who think the owners should clean up after their dogs would just grab a couple of bags and take them to them, I imagine most owners would get the idea pretty quickly.

Hi Ann. Whether you choose to be offended or amused is your choice. But I totally concur with the rest of your response. Cheers, Bazza.
