Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

We had a Samoyed that was a complete wimp. Wouldn't even try the basement stairs that were only a little steeper than the stairs between the main and upper floors. So we lived in a small apt where no dogs were allowed while building a new house. The dog spent 4 months on the farm with my sister's family. Cats to chase up the hay bales in the barn. Rabbits in the woods. Took all the wimp out of him. He will now go anywhere he gets the slightest desire to.

Send them to a farm for "summer camp".

Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

Do you have a foredeck or other hatch that could be used for the dogs? I am expecting to build a series of steps and/or other cabinetry under our foredeck hatch to help our dog enter and exit the cabin. As a bonus, it will also help any shorter people trying to exit through the hatch in case or fire or other emergency. However, it might not be usable for the dogs when under way or in inclement weather. Good luck with your faithful companions. RR.

Ready all the time for deck duty.

I would avoid the dog on the foredeck or you might lose him. Wont he want to be out in the cockpit at times when the boat is moving, but go back in also?

Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

Hi Cheechako, I would only expect the foredeck hatch to be open when at anchor, though for calmer sailing it could be open as well. As this is a trimaran it sails fairly flat, there is lots of flat space around the foredeck hatch and there are safety nets as well nearby. Another thought is that our main companionway steps are beside a bulkhead and I am thinking I might attach a series of fold-out steps at a lesser incline, that the dog can use as well.

RR.

She would go to the loo on the foredeck so we fitted netting to the stanchions which by chance has saved a shed full of other stuff from going over the side and fenders now just live on the deck when coastal cruising.

Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

We have some friends who have a Scottish border collie called Tess, who sails with them. Since the dog struggles with coming down the companion way steps, they have taught to put her to put paws on your shoulders when you say “paws on shoulders” when you are down below and she is on deck. I stand on the bottom step. It works well.

She then lets you pick her up and lift her down below. While you’re doing this she gives you a snuffle in the ear which is kind of cute.

Getting up is not an issue. - she will wait until you whistle from deck and leap up the steps in one bound. But them she is a fit collie with not a spare onuce of fat. I wish the same could be said for me!

We use a ramp for our labradoodle. Just a board we set up and take down, takes jsut a second, but that means when we want him to stay below, he stays below. No quietly, but he stays.

Re: Dogs and companionway ladder

Our golden retriever and yellow lab had their own unique ways of climbing versus leaping up five steps to the cockpit. The male lab had the upper body strength to climb easily until his old legs went out on him. The female can still at a dead stop jump four feet into the vehicle (I wish that I could do that).

Have a rug at the base and the over the top wood piece (where the hatches slide in) to give them traction before and after their ascent or descent. Our dogs are competitors and want to race to do something. They have been known to push each other out of the way to be first. How did that scratch get on the side wall? Because one was trying to be first up the stairs. Be patient. Everything can be fixed. They love you and just want to be with you... Is what I tell myself. My golden retriever is part velcro and lean-to so she demands that she be at the helm in rough seas and rain. The yellow lab was happy under the salon table holding on.

Make sure that they wear life jackets, since one of our dogs was always knocking in the other with his butt, and the yellow lab had misjudged the distance to the boat. Luckily the alligators were not in the marina at the time.
