Do Cats Need a Permit to Enter Bahamas if they Don't Get off the Boat ?

We have heard that in some countries they do not require health certificate, etc. for a cat if it does not get off the boat and the boat stays anchored....does anyone know if this is true for the Bahamas? We do not want to wait so long to get our paperwork from the Bahaman govt, as we are nearing our dept date. Any experience with this?

thanks and sorry if this info is already in a post somewhere, I looked but didnt find it.

Lita

If you would like to bring in a cat or dog, from the US, or Canada, you will need a vertinary health certificate issued 48 hours before embarkation, and a valid certificate of rabies vaccination for either the one year rabies vaccine (given to the animal at least one month before arrival, and not more than 10 months before arrival), or the three year rabies vaccine (given to the animal at least one month before arrival, and not more than 34 months before arrival). For more information contact the Dept. of Agriculture, phone (242) 325-7502/9.

boatkat doesnt EVER leave boat--- yet there are many rules for him...more so than for people.

Cat to Bahamas

If you decide to take your cat to the Bahamas, you need to apply for a permit to import your pet. You can find the form online here. Don't use the old form with the Freeport address like we did. It will never get to the pet permit people. Use the one with the Nassau address.

Send in the application as far ahead of time as possible. Six months would be good. If you are in a hurry, the nice woman at the Dept of Agriculture told us to send it by FedEx. Write on the front of the form to please fax it to you. Add another $5 (for a total of $15) for faxing. Send a money order. No checks. Good luck. We're still waiting...

Update on taking Cats (or Dogs) to the Bahamas

After sending our pet permit application via FedEx and to the correct address, the permit was faxed to us about a week later along with a form for a US vet to fill out after examining the cat.

For those in Lake Worth waiting to cross, we had our cat examined by Dr Ruthenberg at Town & Country Animal Hospital. Online at www.townandcountrypethospital.com They were very nice and best of all, they are located within walking distance of the anchorage at the north end of Lake Worth. Their office is a block or two north of the Publix on US 1.

Lots of places require a rabies titer + a identity chip + a Department of Agriculture from (that requires a recent vet exam). The titer takes weeks to get a result as the test is only done in one lab in Ohio.
