Re: Cost of world crusing with 2 kids (4+7)

and apologies for the multi replies !

we're in much the same situation , starting cruising next may with a (then) 5 and 8 YO . We're budgeting for 2500 euro's a month 'living costs' , so 30K euro a year and have a separate repair/maintenance fund

SV Blue Pearl : a Dutch family preparing to go sailing – a Dutch family preparing to go sailing has more detailed budget info

1k per year per person indeed for what we have, but you can choose between different insurance companies each with several plans and deductibles.

We’re working through pacificprime.com. My wife found them. I don’t know based on which criteria she selected them. They do their job properly but I couldn’t tell you whether they’re better or worse than any other agent. We have no problems getting reimbursed for our medical expenses and so far everything went smoothly.

(I don’t have any other affiliation with them other than being a customer and receive no incentive to mention them here.)

Am I misunderstanding or is the OP British? If that is the case, I would forgo health insurance and instead investigate emergency medical evacuation insurance. Routine health care in most of the world is inexpensive and even minor stuff in the U.S. won't set one back much. A policy that will pay for a jet ambulance back to the UK from anywhere is really the way to go on this.

It’s a valid gambit but the trouble arises when the accident is bad enough that you can’t be moved for instance. There are many other scenarios.

Also many evacuation insurances are strictly hollyday type insurance that aren’t valid if you are away from your home country for more than 3 months a year for instance.

Re: Cost of world crusing with 2 kids (4+7)

We've successfully cruised for almost 3 years with a $2k monthly budget for our family of four. We've sailed the Pacific side of Mexico and the South Pacific. We have been pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it has been to sail the South Pacific...we had always heard how expensive it would be.

Every month I post our "Cost to Cruise" on our blog... down to the last penny.

Absolute Love it!
We gotta bust this myth that you have to have $5K/Mo to cruise and have a great time!
