Circumnavigation with 2 Cats

My wife & I intend to begin a circumnav next summer and we have 2 cats. We would like to take them along but we are concerned about restrictions in many countries. Our cats are house pets and have never been outside. We don't intend to take our pets ashore anywhere but we have heard that many countries require expensive visits by government officials to verify your animals are onboard. Can anyone advise us on preparations we can take to minimize the bureaucratic hassles? We have been looking into a EU pet passport but we're not certain this will be accepted elsewhere! HELP! Mike, check out Noonsite: The global site for cruising sailors and you will have to check the pet regulations FOR EACH COUNTRY individually.

International Pet Travel, Dog Cat Pet Quarantine, Importing Pets is another site dedicated to this topic. Search on "international travel with cat" and you'll find many more.

Mike,

I can tell you from my own experience that if you come through the eastern Caribbean, you won't have any problems as long as the cats stay onboard at all times.

If they stay on board at all times, do you still have to go through all of the quarantine and/or applications for the various countries?

As for dogs, do you know off-hand if the different applications for pet entry are really expensive? I'm sure they want something out of it!

Many thanks!

With 192 member states in the UN and several non-members here and there...You'd be better off checking pet regulations for the ones you plan to visit.

Expect that if the dog is inside territorial waters, it has entered a country and will be subject to quarantine and entry requirements unless otherwise stated.

www.noonsite.com often has pet requirements listed.

Again, speaking from my personal experience cruising with our own cat, in the entire Lesser Antilles you will not need any kind of paperwork at all, and there are no quarantine requirements for a pet of any persuasion that stays onboard at all times. They don't even ask about vaccinations. It's another matter entirely if you want to take the pet ashore!

All you are required to to is declare the pet(s) on the inbound clearance document, and state that they will remain onboard at all times, and that's that.

I'm speaking about countries here in the eastern Caribbean that we've visited personally. But, as Hellosailor has noted, other countries may have different requirements, so check the country's tourism webpage as well as noonsite.com.

For some reason I thought we had a very independently wealthy member who had his and her catamarans for a global trip - LOL...

Singapore has very strict quarantine rules but many boats come through here with animals on-board. Even in restrictive countries it is often a matter of keeping the animals off-shore.

Check each port in advance however. Marina folks are great at providing this kind of info in advance.

MikeR:
you do know that it takes two hulls to make up a catamaran right? Or are you and your wife going to sail two different boats? LOL. Welcome aboard.

Thanks to all of you for the great suggestions particularly eg. noonsite, country webpages and esp. calling or writing marinas. Perhaps when I complete my data collection I should post it. Keep up the good help! Mike

Or, as it seems in the Noonsite info, you'd be better off to wait until you go to NZ and adopt a dog while you're there? Coming from Canada, the import laws are almost non-existent compared to NZ & Oz.

Anyone ever take a Kiwi dog with you? Any feedback?

Cheers!

Also, any feedback on cruising in the Med with a dog (possibly Kiwi?)?
