Best cruising grounds for kid boats?

Hi, we are planning to start an extended cruise (2-3 yr) leaving from NSW Australia in about a year. The initial plan is to travel North up to the Whitsundays and then onto South East Asia via PNG. We cannot find much information on whether this is a common route for cruisers with kids. We have a 5 & 8 yr old and are hoping to meet up with other kid boats along the way.

Will we find kid boats along that route?

Is this post in the wrong forum? Or aren't there many kid boats out this way?

It's the right forum, give it some time. Not everyone is here to pounce on questions. Some questions get answered sooner because there are more active members knowledgeable in those topics. I suspect liveaboard parents aren't sitting at the computer waiting for questions to come in....but they will or probably will eventually...

As far as we know, our kid is the only sailing kid enrolled at the Sydney Distance Education Primary School.

Compared to the US, there are few cruising boats in Australia, and even fewer boats with kids on them.

I think overall there is just not that many kids on boats and no matter which way you sail it will just be luck if you meet other yachts with kids.
I have two kids myself and are always on the lookout for other yachty families and I rarely see them.
I can count on one hand the number of sailing families I have met around Hervey Bay region.
Cheers

Apart from the crewing course and a few race sails we are very new to sailing. We have booked in for an ocean crossing to New Caledonia as crew for later in the year with the ocean sailing club out of Sydney. So hopefully we will get a taste of what to expect on a long passage.

Sounds like we are heading in the same direction anyway. Where are you starting from and approximately when will you be leaving?

We arent too sure when we will be leaving as we are still looking for a boat. We live on the Gold Coast so plan to do a few months around here until we get the hang of things and start venturing up towards Moreton Bay and then the Whitsundays.

How did you get in to the Ocean Crossing to New Caledonia? Is it because you are a member with the club?

Yep. I became a member to do one of the weekend trips. It's only $50 for the year. Then anyone who is a member can go on the long distance trip he takes each year. My wife is doing NC to NZ and I'll do NZ to AU.

Sounds like a very extensive cruise. Will you be staying around PNG and SE Asia? Circumnavigating? Kids age 5 & 8 are young. That's a long time out at sea with mom and dad (or, you and partner?). Also, it's a very big ocean, and not so many children cruising around with elders. Many days at sea, with nobody around sometimes. If your concern is the children not going "bonkers", which would be my concern, then maybe Thailand is a good destination, merely due to the tourism trade ... and maybe ... more kids on boats. Even if young children 'jump at joy' thinking of 3 years at sea, there will be many boring days, and your 5 year old is too young to be doing solo-scuba speargun fishing off the stern while the elders read books. What will they be doing, all day, all night, all day, all night, all day, all night .....

All food for thought. Good luck.

This page details Peter's course offerings. Click on one of them and there is a link to book or phone number to contact him. He is a really nice guy and easy to talk to.

Two boats with kids in that area are Field Trip and Perry. Both cats. You can get info on them at http://www.yit.nz Field Trip has detailed info, not sure Perry is still posting.
