Annual Travel Insurance for Liveaboard

Hi
Im trying to get annual travel insurance for my family as we embark on a years trip to various places.
I tried to get Mariners with Pantaenius but was advised I could only take it out if we were all in the UK (we are in Lanzarote preparing our boat).
Can anyone recommend other options?

To cover what sort of contingencies?

Most "travel" policies do not cover long periods away, may exclude the US, any risky activities like scooters, climbing, diving etc.

Read that fine print!

Just to cover flight delays, medical, money possessions etc as per normal travel insurance.
I find it surprising some insurers wont insure once you are out the country.

Medical and accidents are the wildcards, I would focus on those aspects. The others can be covered 2-3 months at a time very cheaply.

Going to the US can be premiums of thousands of USD per month, as middle class USians have to factor into their household budgets if not covered at work. And that's with strict network restrictions, big deductibles, vigilance needed to avoid bankruptcy-level mistakes.

Not a straightforward topic area. Best IMO to work with a specialist broker.

OTS travel insurance if cheap likely to not come through when you need it.

Evac cover to get you back home if the local care standards are inadequate is best a separate policy as well.

Look in to DAN - Diver's Alert Network. They offer an inexpensive medical evacuation policy that will cover your family and pay for the best way to get to medical care. Does not have to be a diving related problem, you just have to be 50 miles from your "home" address. They will pay for ambulance, helicopter, medical jet, etc., whatever the best way to get the victim to emergency care. They also have a medically staffed 24 hr phone line (in the US) to deal with any emergency requiring evacuation. Don't know if the policy is available outside the US, but it absolutely covers emergencies while travelling outside the US. https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/insurance/

In a lot of lesser developed countries emergency care is severely lacking. Some places it's best to adopt the motto, "When in pain, take a plane!"

Re: Annual Travel Insurance for Liveaboard

As is the case with all insurance matters, one needs to start with identifying / defining the financial risks one is desiring to exchange with an underwriter of a policy.

Traveling means being away from some specific location. What financial risks are you trying to mitigate when "away" that are in addition to or unique to the being away location(s). In determining what those risks are realize that the risk insurance policy or policies that you have providing coverage of similar risks for your non-traveling location and lifestyle may not provide coverage for your away time.

Countries with national health insurance have their unique rules of coverage for health issues arising outside of their country. The USA health insurance market is its own SNAFUed issue, e.g., US health insurance often is "network" specific.

Flight cancellation insurance is easy to pick up on a case by case basis associated with the specific departure.

Best to just get proper medical insurance not travel insurance. Medical insurance is there for you wherever you are. Travel insurance covers you for limited periods (usually 3 months max)
