Look in to DAN - Diver's Alert
Network. They offer an inexpensive medical evacuation policy that will cover your
family and pay for the best way to get to medical care. Does
not have to be a
diving related problem, you just have to be 50 miles from your "home" address. They will pay for ambulance, helicopter, medical jet, etc., whatever the best way to get the victim to
emergency care. They also have a medically staffed 24 hr
phone line (in the US) to deal with any
emergency requiring evacuation. Don't know if the policy is available outside the US, but it absolutely covers emergencies while travelling outside the US.

In a lot of lesser developed countries emergency care is severely lacking. Some places it's best to adopt the motto, "When in pain, take a plane!"
