All She Wants Now Is . . .

Having tried sailing for the first time last month with a trip down the Keys, the Admiral has now told me that the boat NEEDS three more things:
  1. Shower curtains
  2. Unlimited water
  3. Air-conditioning
For the trip down the Keys I just bought a cheap ($100) window air-con from K-Mart and mounted it the companionway. Not good enough I'm told, though I agree too.

Looks like more money to spend, bigger batteries needed, and extra solar panels required. Ah well, things done to keep Admirals happy are rewarded in heaven (the fore-cabin in my case).

There's always something to do on a boat, remember the most expensive way works out to be the cheapest way in the long run.

Air con requires either a gen-set or a marina. You won't power one from a battery for long.

Yes John, quite right, and she understands that. Extra battery and charging power would be for a watermaker.

Hi Paul - If you're planning a watermaker installation, you might want to read our Watermaker page. Ditto for Solar Panels. OK, shameless self promotion, but there's good cruiser-specific info in there.

Cheaper to demote her.

If she wasn't an admiral maybe she wouldn't expect all that pricey gear.

A First Mate could be a lot more affordable

LOL, ever tried to demote an Admiral? Seems like it would need an act of God!

Maybe I should have started her out as a first mate. Easier to promote than demote.

Cruising or living aboard is a team effort. For a pleasant experience, the Admiral must be happy. So, we sold the sailboat and bought a trawler. Now the Admiral/Galley Wench (her words) has a water maker, washer, airco, and a fully equipped galley. We're both happy now.

I would trade in the Admiral before I'd install that stuff. Time for negotiation. Get a backbone.

I'm very fortunate in that my wife understands that a sailboat is not a condo.

Re: All She Wants Now Is . . .

Shower curtains....easy solution, Walmart.

Unlimited water....there is an almost infinite amount on the outside of the hull.

Air conditioning....sail further north.

And the watermaker will pay for itself when you go cruising, so it is an investment. And remember "If the Admiral ain't happy,
no bodies happy!
