Ahoy, We Have Done it !

Hey, I'm sorry it's been so long since my last post, but we have been very busy! Our house sold 3 months ago, and we didn't purchase the Island Lady after all. We found a great deal on a 1985 Cal 9.2, and bought her. She is in great shape, and so far all we've had to replace is the bilge pump. We sold all our excess stuff, and moved on board 2 months ago, and I'm learning new things every day! Right now she is in a marina at Lake Texoma Texas, and we plan in a year to berth her at Corpus Christi Texas. From there, we can do our scuba diving, and trips to Cozumel and beyond. I love sailing her, she is so responsive under sail, I don't have any problems at the tiller! Now for the next hard part, LOL, Navigating. Any advice there?

Hi, KayKay.

Congrats on the new boat! Thanks for bringing us up to date.

As far as learning navigation, I found the USCG Auxilliary's "Basic and Advanced Coastal Navigation" courses to be very good. I had spent decades on boats and was a self-taught coastal navigator, but the course was good for me in that it went into depth on a lot of relevant subjects. And, it's a good way to meet like-minded people of the boating persuasion. Check and see if there's an Auxilliary unit ner you.

It is important after all. Gord's link is good and the USCG Auxiliary is actually one of the few real courses with a class room. It's not offered as much as the boating safety class they teacjh all over but it usually is often condcuted by retired navigators from the USCG or Navy. They actually teach and have a workbook and homework. You only pay for the materials, but you might need to drive. It is taught as a series of classes in two parts. It covers all the stuff you want.

The other sailing schools such as ASA and US Sail don't teach a class and it's more a home study course with an exam and certificate at the end.

A book that covers a fair amount that also has navigation is Chapmans Guide to Piloting. This is a thick book that has about evrything about sailing as far as one book.

Thank you for the good suggestions, we have several USCG aux here at Lake Texoma, I will check 'em out. I have the ASA textbook and was really disappointed in how little they covered navigations. I was amazed at how quickly I learned the technical sides of Phoenix, but I really do reek at math! LOL. I have been practicing jibes and parking, which was a real eye-opener! Also, we are going to convert the ice-box on board to a refriderated unit. I can't wait to get her to the gulf and try my hand at water sailing">blue water sailing.

My how things change!

Well, the time just flys when your having fun! Just to let everyone know, we have sold our beloved Cal 9.2, and have moved up to a very spacious Morgan O/Is 41. Man, seems like the difference in sailing her is huge! I will say, I am impressed with the way she handles rough seas, and is really sea kindly! We have some repairs to make on her, i.e. replacing toilets in the heads, and redoing her flooring, but I think we will have a terrific ship when we're finished with her. I posted some pics of her in the photo galley of us moving her to her new home in Ingleside on the Bay, and I'm looking forward to seeing all my fellow Cruisers out there!

11 extra feet in a boat and 4 times the displacement would make a huge difference!

now, don't go silly with renovations. Some things when you have the Buyers Eye on may look like they need desperate replacing. But after a while you don't notice them and can put the job off for a few years and crusie the meantime

A very exciting time for you!
