Adventurous Spirits

Hi ladies,

I enjoyed reading responses to the college graduate's thread. ...seems like there's supportive folks here.

I graduate college in December 2011 from Oregon State University. When I finish school, my goal is to sail down the coast line from Oregon or California on south, with South America as a final destination. It'll be a backpacking type adventure. Do ladies think its doable?

Thanks

Re: Adventurous Spirits

I know several ladies that have done this and I'm sure would highly recommend the adventure. I'm not sure about wearing a backpack while sailing though

No, indeed. I would imagine it would be better to wrap the rucksack in plastic bags and tie it to the deck.

Here is a link to the Baja Ha Ha Baja Ha-Ha Cruisers Rally: Sailing from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas a rally that leaves from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas. If you can get in with this crowd you should be able to get a ride most or all of the way to South America. B/c of hurricane season most boats don't leave California until the end of October.

Re: Adventurous Spirits

I have met some girls and guys who are doing that sort of thing.
A number of them have one 'rule' that I think is untenable: They want to travel the world without flying. That sounds cute, and cheap etc etc but the reality is there's a few places that a plane is really gunna save your bacon. One being between panama and south to South America.
There plenty of boats taking backpackers from colon, Panama to Cartagena, Columbia as there is no road between.
Its all illegal, of course, and even though most people on the boats would be above board I have heard and met people who are NOT to be trusted in any way whatsoever.
If you are on a boat where drugs (for instance) are on board and you are in some sleazy country south of civilization you may end up in the clink even though the drugs wernt yours.

So select the boats extremely carefully, advise someone back home maybe even email them the boats registration papers etc.

Finally, even though I sail single-handed i.e by myself, I would advise you only to go on boats sailed by a husband and wife, or family etc, unless the recommendation is 100% verifiably nice person.

have fun

You will never know until you take the plunge. You will have many memories to share. Best wishes.
