I'd also strongly recommend the Frigoboat keel cooler design. These are wonderfully efficient, reliable, and virtually silent. Other than scraping the barnacles off the keel cooler a couple of times a year, they are maintenance free. While a little more expensive, they are shipped pre-charged so you can install them yourself if you are moderately handy. They have worldwide distribution and - at least in the US - good support.

The Frigaboat keel cooler is a good unit and has served Byamee well for 6 years .Last week it failed due to the keel cooler been punctured on passage across the south china sea {we hit something} .To replace the unit we would need to haul out which costs money so i have decided to follow Richard Kollmanns advice and go with a Air cooled unit ,not quite as efficent but easier to install and more reliable.
A freezer is good if you are going to remote places and you want a steak 6 weeks after you have left .But it will cost you in terms of power. Since our fridge has failed we never look at the volt metre anymore its always between 12.9 and 13.2 .I hate fridges ....but i love a icy cold beer .........

Re: Which Fridge / Freezer ?

This is my choice on a refit.

http://www.sunfrost.com/Sunfrost_refrigerators.pdf

A monster 19 cubic foot freezer that at 70* ambient consumes 1.25 Kwh per day and a 19 cu ft fridge/freezer split 50/50 takes 0.77 Kwh. The freezer is also (2) 9.5 cubic foot compartments that once provisions are used and you empty one compartment, you can turn that compartment off, thus dropping consumption to 0.63 Kwh. They are pricey at $2940 but you can provision for a family and passage without breaking the bank in solar panels.
