What's your drop of choice?

Snowed-in North American here.

Enough CF posts mention whiskey that I'm curious, as a bourbon snob always willing to try something new.

So tell me: What's your go to on-board whiskey? (Which you only drink at anchor or on the dock, of course.)

Mine: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bourbon

As this is a multinational platform, I've added my non-North American top choice, Cao Ila 18.

Can't say I know bourbon very well. Aside from Wild Turkey in my university days, I've not dabbled much.

For me, when the budget allows (which is not very often these days), I prefer a fine single malt. I lean to the peaty and smoky side of things, so

• Lagavulin
• Talisker
• Bowmore
• or if I really want to taste the soil, Laphroaig

Of course, you always gotta support the local, and so I have enjoyed Glen Breton over the years. I recall when it first launched its single malt, the first in North America (so they claim). Certainly the first in Canada.

Top choices of single malt whiskey:

1. Laphroaig (sentimental reasons besides taste)
2. Lagavulin
3. Glenlivet (Because the first two are not available in Mexico)
4. Black and White (even though this is not a single malt scotch, it is my "table scotch")

The best time of the day is just after sunset when I go outside to BBQ. I put on some good music (new, not oldies), take a glass of scotch, and the meat of the day and chill out while the BBQ sizzles.

You really oughta try Cao Ila, Mike. Since you're an Islay malt guy. Wingsail, you as well.

Gord, from what little I know of you, I would've guessed Crown Royal. For some reason.

Shrew, I'm with you on everything but the Basil, which I find thin. (Palate having been destroyed by 134 proof Elijah Craig.)

And it's not just a whisky, It's an Islay Single malt


There's a lot more than just a "one letter" difference

Ardbeg Black - tastes like a tire fire inside a peat bog - glorious.

Leopold Bros. Rye - unique, small batch, and often has a strong "black walnut" nose that is really pleasant.

Midleton Very Rare Irish - smooth as something vaguely sexual... You'll understand as soon as you drink some.

My wife is the bourbon drinker and her go to is Woodford Reserve.

Now, since I'm not a millionaire, it's a special occasion before I buy some of these, and I never have more than one or two of them around at any one time. And since I don't drink much any more, a bottle can last me a year.

Thanks, Stu. Yes, I knew that Caol Ila is an Islay single malt. I am also aware that Caol Ila means "Sound of Islay."

Before I was a bourbon snob (Under your rules, I should have written "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey snob"), I was obsessed by Islay single malts. I even got a certificate naming me the owner of a square foott of peat bog from Laphroaig when I bought their 18-year-old ("If you decide to visit, bring an anchor and waders." Droll Scots.)

[Lake-Effect]

• Laphroaig (about 2/3 of the way through my christmas bottle)
• Lagavulin
• Dun Bheagan (decent price point, but I like it)

I find that I can put an ounce or less of one of the above in a glass, and nurse it for almost an hour. Mmmmmm.

I've always liked Chivas Regal since my first drink of it 42 years ago, the last few years I tried to jump on the whiskey/whisky snob bandwagon and worked my way through a sizeable selection of single malts. Basically, I've sampled just about all of the above-mentioned tipples sans the Canadian variety. I have come to the conclusion that I obviously have no class because neat Chivas on the rocks still beats them all.
