a fid for splicing braided rope.you have different size fids for different size ropes

It is clearly not a fid - it has a nut-like base on it, that would prevent it from being threaded as a fid needs to be. It is a "larding needle" as StuM stated.

Saw them using that thing on "Wicked Tuna" for taking a core sample to see the fat content in the Tuna meat so the can get a fair price for the tuna .

Similar, but a sashibo tuna grader is longer (thinner ?):

As several noted, while it does indeed look a bit like a fid it's a "larding needle." The previous owners were serious about their galley!
