Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

I replaced the stove top of an electric Seaward Princess because it was too slow and required running the generator, with an Origo 4000 and have loved it. I live aboard full time and burn methyl hydrate purchased at the local hardware stores. Readily available.

You have probably hit the nail on the head.

Corsair is putting Kenyon alcohol stoves in the new 880 and 970 trimarans. I'm sure there must be other manufactures still doing alcohol...?

Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

I've spoken with Dometic. In a nutshell, sales of small stoves fell, replaced by either electric or inexpensive bench-top propane/butane units.

The licenses were sold to Clean Cook, which is selling stoves into the third world through Project Gaia. They are considering retail.

You can still buy some parts, there are stoves on e-bay, and the new Clean Cook stoves use the same fuel canister.

We use the Butane stoves that you see at every omelet bar in a hotel. I have seen a Marine version in a couple of Sea Ray's I do not know how readily available the fuel is in other countries. Great heat output without installation infrastructure of propane

Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

Re:Origo. One theory as to no longer in business is they rarely break down. I have an original Origo heater from the late 1960's that I stiill can use (also doubled as an emergency stove. On my latest boat I use an Origo bought last year and find it great, no electric parts, no preheating. I agree the old pressurized alcohol stoves were a pain, but the simplicity of the Origo wick and quick start make it great. I also have a stove top addition for baking. Havent had problems getting fuel, either in NYC.

Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

I still use a gimballed Optimus Kerosene two burner and a one burner Optimus in a SeaSwing. Pressurized with handpumps but use alcohol for starting. Also a kerosene Force 10 cabin heater. I never understood switching from Atomic 4s to diesel and then using propane. Diesel and kerosene seem like a better safety route.

Grain alcohol works great for my one burner alcohol stove if I'm not using my CNG.

I plan to find out if Everclear works in my low-pressure alcohol stove. It certainly isn't drinkable, at least not North of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Stove builders maybe seeing too much trouble in the future to warrant continuing to make them.

Yes along with real paint thinner or mineral spirits. I have to bring them in from Neveda (not to mention an ozone generator)

Re: What is going on with alcohol cookers?

Sorry to hear that the Origo stoves are scarce. We took out our pressurized alcohol stove in '14 and installed the Origo 6000. Love it. Bakes great in the oven.

Yes, it is a bit slower than propane, maybe an extra minute to boil a quart of water, but much less worry (at least for us). No plumbing, no burners, no CO, no explosion hazard.

Here in northern New Hamphire, our local Hardware store stocks the alcohol for $16/gallon, so we load up each spring.

Again, sorry to hear these fool-proof stoves are going off the market.

Stay safe, all of you.
