What Do You Have In Your Galley ?

I use good dinnerware on-board, which are secured in the cabinet with fids. I do keep a set of four melamine dinner plates (cheap drugstore summer-ware stuff) for when we are going to potlucks. I also use a vacuum sealer, as it is quite handy for when we spear lobster of catch fish and put them in the freezer.

Can't say I have ever had much problem with breakages (of "real" mugs and plates) onboard over the years - and I am a clumsy git ......admittedly not done the liveaboard thing (yet) - but don't break much at home either.............having said that, my usual on passage / in cockpit mug is plastic, but that's just because it's insulated.

But IMO food and drink (especially Tea!) simply taste better when not on plastic.

For Pans / Saucepans - I don't like removable handles (I have enuf trouble with the TV remote ).......have a (small) TEFAL frying pan and a saucepan with folding handles:-



Obviously not really needed - but I thought it was a clever idea.

Funny, I just wrote about this in my blog. Five things I really treasure aboard that I didn't think much about before:
1. Baking stone -- does wonders to even out hot spots. If you don't have an oven, consider an Omnia Stove Top Oven.
2. Good mixing bowl and spoon designed for hand mixing -- cookies, breads, cakes, etc.
3. Knives -- don't need many but a few good ones and a sharpener go a long ways -- I cut and chop lots of stuff!
4.Thermos Nissan bottles -- the best Thermos bottle there is. Actually, I have three -- one for coffee, one for Thermos cooking and one to make yogurt in.
5. Lock&Lock food storage containers -- tops don't pop off and they just don't break. I was amazed at how many I used!

Your cooking/eating habits won't change a whole lot, so look into your land lockers and see what it is that you use most frequently. If it's a large wok perhaps a smaller one would work better with the size of the burners on the boat. Otherwise chose what stacks well and suits your current cooking style.

I prefer Revere pans (the stainless ones your grandmother most likely had) and am using three that are decades old. Still, I did buy a small (one egg size) Teflon pan for making an egg in the morning. There's something about a fried egg sandwich....

As for utensils, think about a sturdy potato masher versus your electric mixer. A couple of hand operated can openers... power is most likely going to be an issue so if you normally use a galley tool that requires electricity now would be the time to replace it with something you can use aboard the boat.

Stove-top coffee makers and/or whistling teapots are universal (don't know of a single boat without one or both.

Corelleware plates and bowls (lightweight, stack tightly for stowing, pretty close to unbreakable, microwavable (while at dock), way nicer to eat on than plastic(melamine))
Silverware
Cheap paper plates, cups and bowls for when doing dishes isn't in the cards. Don't use them at home ever, but aboard they have their place.

With that I can produce pretty much anything.

Thanks Sara, I will copy your list and use it! My galley plan has always consisted of an Army mess kit and a backpacking mess kit and a thermos and a camelback and a P-38 (can opener).....but that was in a canoe! My K bar (knife) cuts branches, lines, meat and potatos chops onions and any vegies and can stir hot liquids LOL. I have been known to eat with it as well, but not in public.

1 regular, 1 perforated lid for the saucepans

plastic, unbreakable French press
stainless thermos bottle
plastic colander
hand-operated can opener
hand-operated corkscrew
peeling knife
bread knife
chef knife
2 spatulas
wooden spoon
2 large (1 glass, 1 stainless) serving bowls
plastic bowls and cups for eating and drinking in the cockpit when underway
regular (breakable) drinking glasses, bowls, plates
knives, forks, table and coffee spoons
lots of plastic boxes / jars for storing food

Most of this came with the boat. In 7 years, we broke only one plate and maybe 3 glasses.

The pressure cooker is one of those things that we want to work really well but we also haven't been able to really make it work all that much. Seems like a huge hassle, makes too much food, pain in the ass to clean. For some stuff like raw beans or anything that has a super long cook time they're handy for us.

Things I love in our galley:

- my manual grinder / stainless french press coffee setup that finally works
- our magma nesting stainless. high quality products, very nice. should have bought them much earlier.
- britta water filter. takes the taste out of the water which *always* has a tank taste (yes, on your boat too).
- plumbing in sea water for blasting gunk off dishes.
- drain rack over the second sink.
- foot pumps. six years constant use, one broke, took a day to fix.
- our plastic dinnerware from west marine. the nautical style with the little rubber grips on the bottom of everything. after four years we're going to toss and buy new but it's held up to a lot of abuse.
- cast iron pan
- coconut oil
- engel fridge
- trader joe's dishsoap (cleans up but unlike joy it actually comes off fairly easily as well)
- gear hammock. it beats up some stuff but we secure it down with a bungie cord so it doesn't swing far enough to hit the bulkheads and it's a great place for bags of nuts and various "loose" galley items.

Wife loves the pressure cooker.

No microwave. We had one when we first moved aboard, and then when it broke we didn't replace it. We don't miss it at all.

Corelle plates and bowls.

Collapsible large bowls.

Ball jar coffee grinder and stainless stove top percolator.

Hand pump for salt water to rinse dishes.

Replaced two burner stove with three burner.

yeah, those collapsible bowls and silicone bake ware are wonderful. Take little space and act as buffers/rattle stoppers between the metal stuff.

Coffee presses tend to make weird, weak coffee. Or maybe I use them wrong. We switched to a stove top percolator, which makes strong coffee that we like a whole lot more.

We used the microwave for storage on Boat #1, and won't have one again on #2.

The unbreakable plastic plates and bowls from West Marine are amazing, they've lasted over 13 years.
