Re: What Can you not find in Certain Countries While Cruising?

Gee, and I thought that a major reason for going cruising was to experience new cuisines not to spend time and extra money to eat like at home. We have enjoyed the experience of seeing what the locals eat and what the stores and restaurants. Why does the idea that you can't get Mexican food in Fiji not seem to be a problem to me? Always fun to see what you can buy like powdered ice cream in Ecuador or incredibly good, inexpensive wine in South Africa.

And you can get PB in a great many places and Vegemite/Marmite in very few, which seems like a service to humanity.

Vege/mar mite, with a fish flavoured milkshake for a chaser should see off the most iron of stomachs.

Your boat repair friend sounds like he is good for you Zee.

Many years ago I met a Marmite smuggler! In Thailand. Ran a small bar in one of the islands that also stocked delicacies for Westerners smuggled up from Malaysia and that did include Marmite. Back then not so easy to get non-local foods in, at least not at cheap prices (lots of tax / duty).

Root beer is truly disgusting. Tastes just like my dentist's mouthwash. Peanut butter follows close behind in the vomit stakes.

Re: What Can you not find in Certain Countries While Cruising?

best root beer floats are in fernandina beach florida. home made ice cream AND home made root beer. anchored out there for a few days and had root beer floats for breakfast and lunch. got me thinking about making my own root beer, which is apparently not too difficult and can be made onboard.

best peanut butter is fresh made at publix supermarkets. but it doesn't travel well so needs to be consumed quickly (no problem). otherwise natural jif creamy is almost as good and travels well.

can't imagine life without peanut butter, or root beer floats.

i just came back from a publix supermarket. they have a 'foreign' food section. i found ..... marmite! six bucks for a rather small jar. can one of you brits or commonwealth guys advise me how you're supposed to eat it????

Decades ago as crew in Norway I was served a whale blubber burger!!! As breakfast and dinner comprised of cold, nameless fish parts, the blubber burger drew the line! It was oddly disguised as beef with a nice charred coating to it! My surprise was on first hungered bite! It oddly disappeared from ship not long after in the middle of a night watch.

You can't get Marine Tex in Australia, except by having it shipped in from the U.S. :-(

Ann

P.S. YUCK on the blubber burger!

It is most unlikely that a Brit served toast and vegemite... if you were anywhere near the UK at least. In Britain, vegemite is almost unknown. The local equivalent there is called "Marmite" and is similar, but slightly different... shinier and even more salty.

Marmite is supposed to be eaten spread thinly, but evenly, on hot buttered toast. It is an acquired taste and $6 for a small jar sounds unjustifiably expensive to me.

I stand corrected Sorry for doubting. He was obviously a worldly Brit!
When I was a little tacker, my Dad used to make us spam fritters (slices of spam, covered in batter, fried) as a special treat. I don't believe I've eaten spam since then. I'll be reasonably happy if I go to my grave without any more spam. I haven't had vegemite since breakfast time
