Vacuum sealing canning jars

I just want to pass on a simple tip for getting better vacuum seals. I have found wetting the lid before vacuum Sealing gives a more positive seal. Also do not store jars right away wait a few hours to make sure vacuum is held. if it is going to fail it will usually happen within a couple hours.

I do this as well. The other thing I have noticed is that the small mouth jar sealer sucks. For whatever reason it almost never works. But the wide mouth jars almost always seal properly.

So how do you seal the 8oz and 4oz jars? Put the lid on then a screw ring to barely snug and put them inside a wide mouth jar (without a lid on it). The vaccume sucks the air out of both jars at the same time and the small mouth jar will seal properly the first time.

Sounds like you might have a faulty"sealer" I have equal results with both the smallmouth and largemouth and before I started vacuum Sealing I read many reviews and most people complain that the large mouth doesn't seal as well as the small mouth.

It's funny how different the reviews are. but here's a good price with free shipping that I came across while looking for canning jars.

Re: Vacuum sealing canning jars

Amazon now has wide mouth half gallon "canning jars" for $6 and free shipping. They come six to a package. that's about half the price I've found before.

Re: Vacuum sealing canning jars

I read where person was having problems with vacuum sealing jars and he put an extra lid on top of the one that is sealing the jar and this solved the problem. The extra lid will stay in the vacuum attachment for future vacuuming.
