vacuum sealer for food

I am purchasing a vacuum sealer and there are a ton, which is best for the boat? Don't want a big one but one that will hold up and is good.

Re: vacuum sealer for food

I’ve gone through many over the years, but my current one is the best: Foodsaver. Mine is the one that operates on both AC and DC (12-volt). Excellent device. I just opened some dried food packs that I sealed in 2014. Perfect.

I use a Foodsaver also and the removable drip tray is one big reason why!

Re: vacuum sealer for food

We have a Foodsaver, 3800, I think. We bought the attachments that allow you to vacuum seal mason jars that are very nice as well. The jar attachments do not allow you to preserve food as if you were doing "canning" but if you have dried food, vacuum jarring works well. A big advantage is that one can reuse the jar and lids.

I have some home dried apples and strawberries that are vacuumed packed in a jar that look like I did vacuum jarred them yesterday.

Dan

Is it the v2865? Does it stand up or lay flat?

Re: vacuum sealer for food

I have an old Foodsaver which I use on board (we are liveaboards). It is an older style so it has a low profile - the new ones seem huge. I use mine for a lot of things, like cheese (take a huge chunk and cut it into smaller hunks for easier serving), meat (which I find works best if you freeze the meat first - assuming you didn't buy it frozen - then Foodsave it - otherwise you are sucking a lot of juice out of the meat, which not only makes it difficult to get a good seal, but also dehydrates your meat). I also use it for crackers, since they are a bloody fortunate in the Bahamas ($7+ for a small box of Triscuits). Ton of other stuff too - tea bags, rice, etc. Highly recommend a vacuum sealer if you live on board.

We wouldn't be without our foodsaver. Our got our first one back in the late 80's or early 90's. We are on our 3rd one now. (The second one really didn't count). I second that the mason jar attachment is excellent for storing so many things...I keep my jars in tube socks to help in storage.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the problem is the dog and cat. *grin* We've broken one glass in ten years, and that at anchor in the sink.

Right. Enough with the plastic cup. Stemless wine glasses with a little wrap before a coasting.

Also not quite a food saver but well worth the space is a 3000' roll of plastic wrap. One box may last the rest of your boating career -- better than ziplocs but not at the level of the vacuum seal. Has many other uses as well -- masking film for painting, wrap up every lunch component for a dinghy trip and then wrap the whole thing together, wrap project parts together. Etc etc.

Re: vacuum sealer for food

I suggest buying a model that has spare parts available.
Had to ditch mine because I couldn't get a new rubber seal.
They do wear out after a tear or so o constant use.

And they are useful to store and seal smaller electronic parts!
No chance of corrosion.
