Anyone have any information of using Vacuum Food Containers, Type, size, make etc

I have a Foodsaver vacuum sealer that I use with bags from HDIUK. Works really well.

Which model and do you know what the power draw is? I hesitated buying one as I didn't know if I could run it on board and I just gave up trying to find the specs of any of the units.

Seaworthy Lass, Connie and I have used ours on a 1000 watt inverter. Works ok but a bit slower but still sucks down enough!

You may want to look into the 12V foodsaver. I don't have any experience with the 12v version, but I am a huge fan of them. I use a lot of mason jars with it for my kitchen, but I would be hesitant on using glass onboard.

We have a Food Saver 4400, but have never used it aboard the boat.for us it is more a tool to seal steaks for the weekend in marinade.

Thanks Bob. That is useful info.
Our inverter is only 600 watts, so I think I was right in guessing it would struggle.

Disappointed I was not getting a proper unit, a month ago I bought a cheap flimsy looking Korean one with a small plastic hand pump. It was only 12€ so not much to lose if it proved hopeless.

So far I have been very impressed. Bags of coffee I stored a month ago are still perfectly airtight. Extra bags are relatively expensive, so it is less good for bulk storage. All I have needed it for is coffee beans and cheese though and few bags are needed for this. I pop the cheese into thin plastic freezer bags first, so the reusable bags do not need to be washed out carefully.

It takes up little space and uses only very little muscle power :

I have a Sinbo it has a snorkel type device that allows me to use standard bags not needing the types with the ribs that cost a lot more. The model I have (DZ 280/2SE)



has a "jar" on its side that keeps dusty items and liquids from going into the vacuum pump. It also allows me to use food saver attachments for vacuum sealing mason jars which is my preferred method of long-term storage. It works great I'm very happy with it. There are also videos on YouTube about using a food saver and making your own snorkel so you can use the cheaper bags. My sealer runs off of a 1000 watt inverter with no problems

The link takes you to the model we bought. Not sure what the power draw is but we run it off the 2kw inverter only when the wind is blowing or off the genny.

So I liked the hand pump version. I have a food saver but it's big and bulky and takes up a lot of space. I did a quick search on amazon and found a ziplock version of the hand pump vacuum sealer.

Might be a better alternative when you consider power and space.

I recently bought the 12v Foodsaver, which also runs on AC. I've had a number of sealers over the years and this is, bar none, the best I've used.

Will do Lass ... as soon as I can get to my boat. The snows are still deep, and the ice is still thick. Hope springs eternal, and so does Spring ... I hope .

I'm going to try and get to my boat this coming week. If I do I'll get an amp reading for you.

OK ... Just went and looked at the machine. It is rated at 6.3 amps @ 12 volts.

Thanks for all the input, but I am looking for advise on some containers that can be vacuum sealed in order to for instance seal some salad of things that does not want to be crushed by the plastic bag?
