Have one of those as well, so while it is the very best for espresso, it just doesn't cut it for coffee... of course, that's simply one man's opinion!

We are coffee fanatics. We just took on our latest order ... $800 worth of Kenya AA Extra Bold. We brew it in this high pressure unit that gives us a deep black coffee with a thick rich crema.

No hand grinder good enough?

Or just too much work?

I have a nice hand grinder, and it is absolutely too much work to grind more than a single cup.

Electric grinder is on my list.

I have a hand grinder as well for coffee emergencies!

It’s a Kyocera Ceramic Burr Coffee Grinder - no rust issues and works great,
but as Dockhead mentioned, it’s a bit of work to properly grind enough for a full pot, so it only comes out when we’re in dire need, at which point I’m just making a mug for the wife and I to share!

Re: Vacuum Coffee Pot on Board?

On the boat and at home we perc our coffee then pour it into a Stanley "thermos". The trick we have found is to use wrap coffee filters in the percolator. They go in the basket and wrap around the coffee, keeping the grounds in the basket and the bitterness out of the coffee. We then pour it into the Stanley which we keep the coffee piping hot for at least 12 hours. My wife found that the coffee was not hot enough for her liking with other methods.

Re: Vacuum Coffee Pot on Board?

We love our morning coffee and evening tea, and trying everything out there we settled on a kettle for heating water and two of these French Press mugs:

https://planetarydesign.com/shop/ste...with-bru-stop/

Use any coffee you want (preferably coarse blend but I found any will work), put it in the mug with/without cream/sugar, pour not-quite-boiling water over it, gently stir, put the press/lid on it and wait 4 minutes. Gently push the press down till it stops and drink right from the mug. Wash/rinse when done!

The best and easiest - I have one at work as well!

Cheers!

We also perk onboard. Keep everything clean and it’s great coffee.
While on land I had a super automatic with over 14k cups made, so I’m a fan of espresso and coffee.

Re: Vacuum Coffee Pot on Board?

As a coffee snob, I found it worthwhile to bring unroasted beans along, since they last up to about a year. I would roast my own using a metal bowl and a heat gun every few days, this way it was always fresh coffee. Manual burr grinder and stainless french press. I found the extra work worthwhile for the flavor.

Only downside is I had to haul out the Honda i2000 every few days to roast, my inverter couldn't keep up with a heat gun for the roasting.

We use a stove top percolator.

We use the Melitta disk-style filters. The key to stove top percolation is to watch the percolation. Turn it on high until it starts to hard boil in the sight glass, then turn it down to medium low for 5 minutes. Once done take it off the stove. People either over cook it, or keep it 'warming' on the stove, which burns it. We pour the pot into a large thermos to keep it hot.

Love my single cup Keuirg machine. No mess, get different coffee for entire crew. When you feel like a cup, ready in 3 minutes. Can also get tea and hot chocolate.

Re: Vacuum Coffee Pot on Board?

A little off topic but for those who handgrind their beans, check out the Handground coffee grinder. I used to use the Hario/Kyocera style. Picked up the Handground a few years ago and like it quite a bit more. Not perfect but much better IMO. It's a side crank instead of top crank and the grind size can be set easily with the 1-8 markings rather than guessing. I guess that only really matters if you like to make coffee in different ways but a nice feature anyways.

I might try this. I have a heat gun, and my inverter easily deals with it.

My father, who sold his boat and swallowed the anchor a couple of years ago, has one of these on land. I was quite surprised at what good coffee it makes.

Re: Vacuum Coffee Pot on Board?

Similar to Captain Crunchie, we boil water in a pan, then add the ground coffee and let it set, stir, then pour through a small plastic strainer that is coffee mug sized to take out the final few floating grounds.

Perfect cup of coffee, though when not sailing and having guests we use a french press.
