Using A Hanging Mesh Dehydrator
Not on a boat yet, but gearing my kitchen around that and downsizing some. Searched for dehydrators on here - not finding what I am looking for. I just sold my Excalibur 9 tray which I was very happy with. This may have been a mistake as I see some of you have them onboard. I have seen a hanging type on a Youtube sailing channel, probably Sailing Sophisticated Lady, but can't find any good info online. I am willing to take the $25 plunge for the mesh hanging dehydrator, but just trying to find out if it's feasible or determine what its limitations are. Thanks in advance!

Re: Using A Hanging Mesh Dehydrator
Hi Nomad, I used to dry all manner of foods on land in my home-made dehydrator, so I’m trying to learn how best to do it on the boat. I built myself a solar dehydrator using the plans from Sailing the Farm (Copyright @ 1981, by Ken Neumeyer).
I must admit I have yet to put it to the test. Hopefully this coming season… but it looks pretty good. I’m sure it will work given the right conditions.
However … I’m not convinced this will be as good as my land-based electric dryer. I’ve been considering buying an Excalibur-type dehydrator for those times when I want to dry in bulk.

Re: Using A Hanging Mesh Dehydrator
A boat is rarely a dry enough place to dehydrate things. I think a powered dehydrator, even if that means solar powered, is going to be necessary.

Whoops! Very newbie. Thanks for the replies. Conditions vary and I know humidity is an issue, but trying to avoid another electric appliance. Airflow and heat a given. I'll look forward to experimenting!

We have been using the same dryer that we copied from sailing the farm for the past 20 years and it has worked a charm.
Papaya, Bananas, Mahi Mahi (marinated in soy sauce and honey), Mango.
Usually takes 2 days in warm weather with a bit of breeze.
As you know it folds up flat and is easy to store. We made one with 4 shelves.
Cheers

That’s great to hear. Thanks. I made mine out of black sunbrella, and have four shelves, but made the cloth box long enough to put a couple more if need be.
I’m sure it will work quite well on sunny/light windy days. Ambient humidity will, of course, make a difference, but the function of dehydrators is to deal with this moisture by moving it out. I can’t see why this design won’t work well.
I do wonder if this dehydrator be useful for bulk drying. In my previous land-based life I’d buy food when it is in-season (and cheap), and dry large amounts in a fairly short amount of time. I’d like to do this while cruising, which is why I’m considering buying an electric dehydrator, like one from Excalibur.
