The Three Best Cookbooks for Travelling with a Small Galley !

I have three (new for me) cookbooks that are the best for long term travelling on your vessels:

The Two Burner Gourmet: A great cookbook specializing in feeding a large group. This book gives somes extras like what the crew's favorite dishes are and what the biggest values are (time & ingredients). I cannot say enough about this book. I found mine at a thrift store that I was donating to, without any expectation of trading a thing. LucKy me!

Galley Topics: This cookbook is great. The author has great humor and I'm sure anyone who is on the water will understand her dialogue. The recipes are very good with great ideas using convenient items. The list of recipes seem endless!

The Meatless Gourmet: It's the ultimate cookbook for anyone who is a flexitarian. Although I used to be a vegetarian, I still refer to this cookbook for great ideas adn even greater recipes using TVP and other items that only vegetarians would be familiar with. This is a good thing.

Cheers all!

Re: The best three cookbooks for travelling with a small galley!

OK,
How embarrassing is it to run and look for that cookbook, but the Safety Officer has stored it elsewhere. It might be the Cruising Cookbook or the Yachting Cookbook, but it has a fish chowder recipe that is killer. A neighbor captain was inviting us to his cottage and had this fish stew bring all day. It would be a magnet in any harbor, and all you need is fish. And some potatoes. Maybe some salt pork or bacon. Onions.
I like your selection. Working with just a couple of burners is a good way to develop skills for at sea. Even one burner. Tot to find that book.

I love my old standby Better Homes & Gardens cookbook, Crockpot Cooking, and my collection of recipes I keep on the computer.

I do not use recipes as a rule however ...Ok... I will say it .."The Joy of Cooking'. Simply a great refference to have just in case you have a "senior moment" It's all in the details.

Joy of Cooking. Had the old dog eared two volume paperbacks for years. Now a new hardcover. Great reference books.

I have Braises and Stews, and many more like it. Great for small spaces. Who would've thought that some of the greatest meals could be made in one pot?

Joy of Cooking is a great reference, I also like Cruising Chef Cookbook by Michael Greenwald and More-With-Less, a Mennonite cookbook by Doris Longacre for a "greener" approach, less meat.

Coming in June 2012, The Boat Galley Cookbook, published by International Marine. Check out my co-author's website The Boat Galley for useful info on cooking aboard. Or click on my website below and then on The Boat Galley Cookbook for a preview of what's in the book and sign up for more information. Hope this isn't too blatant ... we're excited about the book.

OK, I found the cookbook."The Yachting Cookbook" by Elizabeth Wheeler and Jennifer Trainer. A customer showed it to me before I retired and I found one on Amazon. I highly recommend "Ernestina's Fish Chowder" on page 52. If only I could catch a fish.

Re: The Three Best Cookbooks for Travelling with a Small Galley !

Since our boat is still under construction and our diesel stove isn't working yet, I'm pretty much cooking everything in my Wolfgang Puck electric pressure cooker, which works great by the way. Cooking Under Pressure & The Pressured Cook by Lorna Sass are excellent with zesty recipes and some interesting ethnic dishes that will surprise your crew and satisfy any gourmet aboard, while saving $$ on propane/cooking fuel. She wrote a Vegetarian pressure cooker cookbook as well. Sass also outlines cooking times and gives general tips for pressure cooking that spark your own ideas for adapting recipes -- an invaluable resource. Even phone numbers for the major makers, if you need to order replacement gaskets etc. The Old Fashioned Beef Stew is a standby for a wholesome cold weather dish. The mushroom risotto is fabulous (note: I use "some" dried boletus mushrooms for flavor - not the 1 full oz -- and add 8 oz of champignons for a dish that still wows but doesn't break the bank.) Sass is my cookbook writer hero!

Definitely Joy of Cooking. I like Greenwald also. Any one Lorna Sass book is fine - they rehash after that. MtAoFC is a must-have reference. If you are really a foodie you should have a copy of Harold McGee "On Food and Cooking."

My 1932 cookbook is by far my favorite -- Good Housekeeping Collection of Recipes. It is falling apart so I keep it in a large ziplock. No 'convenience' ingredients in this wonderful old cookbook.
