Super Smoothies

OK, so in preparation for sailing off next year (insh'allah) I have cut down the grocery budget, started looking out for a decent pressure cooker, reverted to cooking with wholesome foods, made my own sushi and cut down on meats to the consternation of hubby. Oh, and I've started to slim down!!

Having read the essential foods thread right through (took a while - I haven't had time to read a novel in months) I also bought a tin of NIDO powdered milk. Now I need to practise doing different things with it - and I'm going to start by using it for Smoothies!

So - what are your favourite Smoothies?? Unusual smoothies?? Healthy Smoothies?? Unhealthy Smoothies?? Smoothies which use fruit/veg which last for a long time?? Here's a start:

Butternut Squash Smoothie:

1/2 cup NIDO
1/2 cup Squash
1/4 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Ice!

Admitted, I just made this up - gonna try it this afternoon when I get back from sailing - will let you know how it tastes!

If you can find fresh veggies and fruits in a cruising port you can also find UHT milk. So no need to suffer. Sounds good though!

Even better - so you can also start with "1/2 glass UHT milk", if you like!!

Here's another:

1/2 cup whatever milk (or 2nd rate substitute) you have
1 squishy brown banana on its last legs
1tbsp peanut butter

Did your squash smoothie taste as bad as it "sounded" (to me)?

Erm... I was so high after working out (adrenalin, I believe) that I completely forgot to cook the squash and tried the banana & peanut butter one instead. Had it with NIDO instead of yoghurt - not so nice....

Don't see so many new ideas, so banana and PB it is..... and will be every day (except tomo when I cook the squash)

Cantaloupe smoothie,
You need a juicer to make it but if you love creamy milk shakes it is worth the extra appliance onboard.
Chill a nice ripe cantaloupe, cut it up, scrape out the seeds, and juice it, (rhine and all).... Once you try this, you will forever turn your nose up at a vanilla milkshake. Honeydews and watermelon are great too.(again rind and all< the good stuff is in the rind)

I have a "Bullet" aboard and I make a simple drink in the a.m. before work...
Strawberries
pineapple
frozen banana
stuff it all in my bullet, zip zip and drink. mmmmm..

1 egg cracked in
nice dollop of plain yogurt

For individual smoothies with micro power requirement and individual serving try the Magic Bullet. If you haven't heard it is a nifty mini blender ideal for a single serving. We use one on our boat all the time, 120v dock pwr, genset, or inverter.

I'm drinking it now. OMG, it's amazing!!

I made it from:

1/2 cup Curried Squash Soup (which I make with Curry powder and raisins)
1/2 cup LF Milk
1 cup crushed ice.

It's so dreamy....

Hey - this is weird - as I'm sitting here drinking it, the milk seems to be seperating from the squash soup.... I'm getting these weird white rings around the rim...

Tomorrow I might try the melon smoothie by Ocean Girl. Not sure how the watermelon will go with the banana, but I'll give most things a go once!!

Those bullets are handy but for real power get a Vita Mix...you can even cook soup from friction, the blades go so fast.

It makes the best margaritas...

Here's one I just found... It's a MUST!!!

In a blender combine:
6 baby carrots (you will never know they're in there)
15 grams (1/2 scoop) of any good whey protein powder- I recommend chocolate
10 grams (about enough to fill the palm of your hand)wheat bran fibre cereal
1/2 banana
about 2 oz water
6 large ice cubes (add more or less - one at a time).
when I do this with chocolate protein,I also add a teaspoon full of fresh ginger, teaspoon instant coffee granules & pinch of cinnamon.
DO NOT ADD MILK OR YOGOURT - YOU DON'T NEED IT FOR A CREAMY, FLUFFY SMOOTHIE.
Whiz until totally fluffy and smooth. It will be like a whipped Frosty-style shake.
