Solar ovens/cookers

I'm planning on a voyage from S.F. to Hawaii. I expect for at least part of the trip there will be much sun. Has anyone used a solar cooker / oven to reduce the amount of alcohol needed for the cabin stove? I've read a few reviews that said they were great for camping. If I can set it down in the cockpit (out of the wind) it could prove very useful. I can also picture using it as the heat source of a solar still for fresh water production.

What do you think?

Re: Solar ovens/cookers

We have a Go Sun Sport - basically a long tube. We mostly use it for baking baguettes and roasting nuts and stale crackers, also roasting vegetables and pre-cooking potatoes and similar. The tube form factor is a limitation. It gets very hot but does need full or near full sun and you do need to keep it aligned with the sun. More of a toy, really. But other designs work as well and as long as you’re patient they all work well enough. Want a roast dinner at 5:00 pm? Start cooking at 10:00 am.

Re: Solar ovens/cookers

I have the Chinese version of Go Sun Sport. I bought it a few years ago on the largest Chinese sales portal on "A...".
I also want to use it during long cruises. I tested it on my terrace in central Europe - the sun doesn't shine as strongly as in Hawaii.
We managed to bake sliced potatoes and baguettes without any problems. The baguettes baked for about an hour. The dough did not rise well because the yeast was old.
And please don't laugh - it was my first cake I made.
You can see it in the photos.

Re: Solar ovens/cookers

Thanks for the feedback and ideas. The boat is only 28' so I think we need a fold flat design. The link to Energy Research UFL has a lot of good info. I'll probably buy one on line (vs making one) as they may be more durable and water proof than the cardboard home made ones.

What do you think?

Hugh

I have no personal experience except for a friend who bragged that he cooked his burrito in 4 hours on land.

I have doubts about solar oven efficiency on the open ocean due to wind and vessel movement.

Edit: Welcome to CF Hugh

Re: Solar ovens/cookers

Thanks for the welcome. I agree keeping it sheltered in the cockpit may not be enough to mitigate heat loss due to wind. Some designs have a box with a glass or plexiglass top to trap heat but they don't usually fold flat. And if the sail casts a shadow on the cockpit you wouldn't cook anything. But we are still months away from departure so I think I'll get one to try.
Being at anchor would help a lot. Maybe more use when cruising to Baja and Mexico or the Caribbean.

Re: Solar ovens/cookers

This device, the link of which you showed in the topic "Desalination Breakthroughs?" it definitely won't work well. You may be able to reheat food, but you definitely won't cook anything. You might as well put a black pot in the cockpit and put aluminum foil around it and start waiting, waiting, waiting . I checked the opinions on auction websites in my country - all negative, you can't cook with it even in the middle of summer.
Please note that this device I showed in my photos has vacuum insulation. The vacuum insulates perfectly, so the food does not cool down and high temperatures may arise. Additionally, a special layer inside the pipe absorbs sunlight very strongly, making the inside of the pipe very hot.
I had a 27-foot yacht. I sailed with my wife and daughter on the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. You will definitely find a place for a GoSun device on your boat.
I see that the price of what you showed in the link is similar to the price of the device I bought. They can still be purchased on a Chinese auction site.
I'm writing partly using Google translator, so I apologize for any mistakes.
