Re: Solar oven?

One posted was used. Good luck finding them on Craigslist. And here's another on eBay but they charge $60 shipping so the price is basically $200starting bid Click image for larger version

ID:	175442 whether this is a good investment depends on how much you cook normal propane use is not a good comparison because I have my oven running everyday that it's sunny, dehydrating bananas currently.

Re: Solar oven?

We have used the GoSun sport for around 6 months and I am very happy with the design and use. Only caveat is dont wait to late to start food cooking.

Re: Solar oven?

Check out my posts on dehydrating and mouth-watering boat recipes , mainly plant-based. Here is a photo of a bowl that has a layer of sliced potatoes, a layer of hamburger that is totally browned: taste awesome and I started to put cauliflower on the top and will cover with cauliflower that I scooped out of my fermenting jar. The reason it's a little pink is because I used a red cabbage leaf to hold everything under the salt solution. this literally took me 5 minutes prep time, and the wind has been out of the East so I've only had to rotate my solar oven three times during the dayClick image for larger version

I have the bowl covered with the stoneware lid that came with the solar oven. And I'm also cooking split pea in a separate Bowl and barley in a vegetable bone broth

Re: Solar oven?

On the one hand a lot of money, on the other- less than or equal to a propane stove and never requires fuel. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F173659743802

Re: Solar oven?

That usn’t a bad price. It’ is the large unit for like a family or if you cook big meals. The smaller version is what we use and saw used a lot across the Bahamas.

Re: Solar oven?

Small Tube Chinese knockoff with protected reflector and tray for less than $55 including shipping on eBay right now. Still need to get new reflectors for my box type oven but I've been using the plastic mirrors from my medicine cabinet. Today I cooked cheese calzones and split pea with spicy sausages. Split pea n sausages are in a stainless steel container so I covered it with the dark lid but I don't know if this is really necessary. stainless steel gets really hot even though it reflects visible light. PS the bread is sprouted rye, oatmeal with cheddar cheese in one, mozzarella in the other. I used cornmeal so minimal clean upClick image for larger version

Cheese in the center of the bread? OK, interesting! I normally would put the cheese on later, so I can have the option of a sweet slice of bread as well.

Well I did consider making one just a normal loaf. I also considered adding pizza sauce to one, kind of like an inside-out Pizza... that's what a calzone is. Definitely going to make a fully loaded loaded one in the near future.

Fragility and high windage are to the biggest drawbacks to these types of ovens. Many times squalls come out of nowhere. that's why I went from recommending the Big 5" type to this cheap model, because you could get four of these for price of one large or 1 genuine Go sun. Re: Solar oven?

Bumping this thread as I want to get a solar oven to take back with me to Mexico, since I love making my own bread but it's really hard on my 6lb propane cylinders!

Was looking at the gosun ones, but I'd be limited to baguettes (and fish fillets look like they wouldn't fit either) but the bigger ones don't seem to get up to 400c (the temp I use for baking).

Anyone got any ideas?

400 C ? Are you sure?

For bigger size/volume, you might want to look at box-like solar ovens with four reflectors that fold out and concentrate the light.

You could also think about a 2-stage process: rise and pre-bake in the solar oven, then chuck it in the "400 C gas furnace" for the crust, 10 mins might suffice.
