Re: Scurvy & the Cruiser [Vitamin C]

Where I'm currently living has two marinas with plenty of scurvy. And I hear the past two years that there is some (significant) scurvy now anchored out around the lake.

Back in the Dark Ages, when men were manly and women were thin and knew how to cook, Home Economics was a mandatory class in school, and I remember my Home Ec teacher telling us that with the "modern" crap US diet, if it wasn't for the vitamin C in french fries and potato chips that the US would be rampant with cases of scurvy.

Since so many boaters enjoy imbibing, I don't understand why a modern version of the Limey, involving margaritas of course, hasn't taken root. The amp draw to make ice and run a blender shouldn't be an issue with all the modern electronics.

Your in fresh water I assume.
Now seaweed is very good for the diet.
Seaweed is rich in many vitamins and minerals, including:

Vitamin C: Helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots

Iodine: Helps prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases

Calcium: Helps build and maintain strong bones and teeth

Vitamin B2: Helps produce energy from proteins

Vitamin B12: Helps produce red blood cells and cell division

Vitamin E: Helps hydrate the skin

Iron: Many seaweeds contain higher levels of iron than terrestrial plants

Fiber: Seaweed is a prebiotic that benefits the immune system

Vitamin A: Found in kelp

Folate: Found in kelp

Seaweed also contains potassium and fatty acids. However, seaweed can interfere with certain medications, including blood-thinning medications like warfarin .

How does one ENJOY eating seaweed?

Babobab powder is a nice addition to several meal options and is absurdly high in good stuff.

I find seared fresh tuna with garlic, chilli, limes, ginger plus wine or cocktails to be a good way to deal with the stress of worrying about scurvy.

No. I have not done 80 days non-stop.

I have done 134 days non stop on a US Navy aircraft carrier don't recomend it .
32 days from avalon Panama to Papeete Tahiti. Was plenty long enough under sail .

Kelp is great when pickled or grilled like a squash.
Most sushi rolls use seaweed mainly nori seaweed sheets.
Many are rinced in freshwater and prepared just like any other green salad. A little vinaigrette salt and pepper and enjoy.
The book I offered to send to any that want it has about 30 pages on all the various seaweeds and how to prepare them for eating. .

Warfarin is really a name of a drug? How appropriate! But if seaweed interferes with it, only better

Some info here https://www.todayifoundout.com/index...-of-ice-cream/

and a different approach here that I haven't come across or tried https://www.nauticalfarms.com/blogs/...e-cream-recipe

Kelp is harvested commercially on the west coast of King Island, Bass Strait, and in Northern Chile.
On King Island they collect kelp that comes ashore after storms, dry it and send it to Scotland - or I have been toldthats where it goes.
Not such a good method in Chile where they dive on the kelp beds.
A kelp harvesters' settlement, Caleta Constitución, near Antofagasta, Chile

Re: Scurvy & the Cruiser [Vitamin C]

I quite like these https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/p...ackers-seaweed
Says on the label 0.5% seaweed so seaweed is a regular part of my diet.

Not really a good thing warfarin is a blood thinner that people who are at risk for a second ( or more ) stroke or mitrocardial infarction take to prevent them
