So when I was in the Bahamas there was cheap rum and beer was expensive. I found that you could find rum for around $11/bottle (white or dark as they tasted the same). But also there was expensive rum and it was amazing how a hole in the wall place would have a $200 bottle of rum. For the most part the brands were the same as I had seen in the USA.

Re: Rum

So a friend is passing through Nassau on his way to catch a flight to meet us down in the Exumas. "Hey you need anything?"

"Sure, rum down here is twenty bucks but ten in Nassau, get some rum!" I said.

My friend reaches for a bottle of brown rum without looking closely at it. Turns out to be Ricardo Mango Rum which maybe isn't a dark rum but is in a dark brown bottle. Blarff! Really the most heinously vile concoction imaginable next to the Captain's. Yuck!

We tried to make fruity rum punches with it but ended up dumping half a bottle overboard. Total alcohol abuse. Neptune repaid our lack of consideration with a blow that kept us trapped at anchor for three days. Should have dumped it on the beach....

Sorry Neptune!!!!

Re: Rum

Lots of good rums listed but my old standby will always be Pussers. Great neat and an awesome painkiller.

Re: Rum

I drink a bottle of rum every 3 days or less, and the only thing I consider myself to be a true expert in is rum. I'd rather drink a low fat pumpkin spiced cappuccino than spiced rum and, in my opinion, white rum is only suitable for daquiries (the real ones, not that stuff from a blender), in which case I prefer Flor de Cana Silver. Mostly I drink aged dark rums. My everyday rum is Santa Teresa Anejo (VZ), $16 by the bottle ($12 when you buy 6 cases at a pop...). My second favorite overall (for the record, I will not spend more than $40 for a bottle; although I can afford it, it offends me) is also a Santa Teresa rum, 1796 (their year of incorporation). My favorite rum is Mt Gay XO (Barbados). There are many others that I drink on occasion. The El Dorado aged rums from Guyana are among my favorites, as is Ron de Barrilito 3 Star (PR). If you finish that list and like them and want more, let me know. And, to paraphrase Hunter S Thompson, I don't recommend excessive rum consumption as a way of life to anyone, but it works for me.

You better make your Painkiller with Pussers. If you don't they will sue you.

Re: Rum

Don Q gran anjejo and Don Q 10 yr aged limited that is only released every other year in small batches and to my knowledge only available in Puerto Rico. Both about mid $40s here.
Also a fan of Ron Zacapa 23yr

Re: Rum

Ron Botran has a new version of Zacapa out which is aged in charred barrels....thus Zacapa Negra. I ran across a bottle priced at about $75...a bit steep for a taste test. Anyone tried it yet?

Im travelling back to Guatemala in November and hoping they have samples at duty free in the airport!

Re: Rum

+1 for Flor de Cana but I prefer the 7y vs the 12 all prices aside. My second go to is Havana Club 7y. The only time I'll waste good rum in a coke is if I need some caffeine and there's no cheap sh*t around as there rarely is on our boat unless we've had someone on board who left some.
